I will be meeting with WW II Vets, taking portraits and limited oral histories, shared in a multimedia event on Veteran's Day 2012.
This project grew out of an assignment for a documentary photography course at SUNY Albany. As I photographed the first World War II veterans and heard their stories, it occurred to me what a wealth of living history they were, and how important it was to capture these moments while we have the opportunity. This effort will include veterans and others who played roles relevant to World War II. I will be recruiting participants via Veteran's associations, senior living facilities, individual contacts, and social media. I am restricting my focus to the Northeast only to minimize travel costs - I can drive to meet individuals and groups, transport my lighting and camera equipment, and minimize lodging costs by staying with friends and family when possible. My dream is that this project may serve as the foundation for a non-profit that continues this work on a national level, and honors the men and women that have served our nation so well, in every theater in the 20th and 21st centuries.
Traditionally, history is told from a third-person, "top down" perspective. Through these images and comments, we can illustrate and humanize history in a dynamic way that can be understood and accessed by all ages. By looking into the eyes of the men and women who lived this history, perhaps we can limit how many of our children will see it repeated.
