My new documentary, A Mexican Sound, goes to the mountains of northeastern Mexico to unlock the secrets of a very special kind of music and communal dance called son huasteco. It'll be 26 minutes long and packed with beautiful music and breathtaking images from the Mexican countryside.

This is a fun, uplifting film that reveals a side of the Mexico we rarely see or hear about: a Mexico full of warm people, majestic landscapes, and vibrant communities and traditions. If you're not already a fan of son huasteco music, I know you will be by the time you finish watching this film. Its energy and emotion are contagious.

Editing is almost finished and I'm on schedule to begin submitting to film festivals this fall. But before I do, I still need to pay for rights to all the music I'm using and hire talented folks to do the audio mix, the color correction, and other odds and ends. Please help me finish this film and get it out to the world!

P.S. If you’re a fan of the Café Tacuba songs "Ojala que llueva cafe" and "Las flores", then you may have heard son huasteco before without even realizing it.

I was born and raised in Kentucky, and I didn't know much of anything about Mexico until I took a job waiting tables 9 years ago. Many of my co-workers at the restaurant—the cooks, the busboys, the dishwashers—were Mexican immigrants. After leaving my job at the restaurant, I decided to spend a few years in Mexico trying to understand why my co-workers (and millions of people like them) migrate to the US. That's when I made my first film, The Other Side of Immigration. A low budget, independent film in the truest sense, The Other Side of Immigration has gone on to screen at over 100 events around the world. I'm also the director of a very short film about the US-Mexico border fence, which maybe you saw on YouTube. My documentaries have been featured by a wide range of media outlets, including NPR, Fox News, Univision's Al Punto con Jorge Ramos, Telemundo, The Huffington Post, The Economist, and many others.
