Bound, a new dance theatre production, tells the stories of nine individuals living under occupation.
New York City based Yaa Samar! Dance Theatre presents the world premiere of Bound, an evening length dance theater performance commissioned by the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center on October 21-22, at 7:30pm. Created in collaboration with artists in the Middle East through an innovative online rehearsal process using video conferencing and the web; Bound explores the adaptability of the human spirit through the stories of nine individuals living under occupation.
Integrating Skype into her creative process after her temporary relocation to Ramallah, choreographer Samar Haddad King found new ways to connect with her dancers in New York. "It began as a necessity but developed into an inspiration for the piece." King says. "Experiencing the current situation in the Middle East while continuing my work with dance in New York through Skype, I began noticing that there are barriers everywhere. Hopefully audiences will identify with the work and find new ways to navigate through their own boundaries and feelings of occupation."
For the duration of the performance, a fearless ensemble of dancers will scale buildings, brave ledges and paint walls in an effort to retain a sense of normalcy in an environment of chaos and impending ruin. The original score by Palestinian composer/musician boikutt incorporates natural and industrial noises with elements of hip-hop, experimental and ambient music to create a driving and rhythmic urban landscape for this multimedia production.
