Grand Morelos is Marco Coppola's MFA pre-thesis project in the graduate film program at New York University and will run the festival circuit.

Grand Morelos è il film che Marco Coppola girerà come progetto pre-tesi per il suo Master in Film alla New York University, ed è destinato al circuito dei Festival.

The film is about Charlie, a street musician in his early 60s who's been playing the saxophone his entire life. Now that he has glaucoma and is bound to become blind, the doctor urges him to avoid playing the saxophone, because it increases the eye pressure; but he doesn't care. He wants to play his instrument.
While playing the sax on the sidewalk, his sight gets worse. He enters a diner and orders a piece of cake from Carmen, a 36 year-old Mexican waitress who feels ignored by everybody. When Charlie starts talking to her as if she is a dear friend, she finally feels important to someone, and inspires him to go to Manhattan for a moment of glory. But it's too late to be seen by his eyes

E' la storia di Charlie, un artista di strada sulla sessantina che suona il sassofono da una vita. Ora che gli è stato diagnosticato il glaucoma e rischia di diventare cieco, il dottore gli impone di smettere di suonare, perché soffiare nel sax aumenta la pressione oculare. Ma a lui non importa: Charlie vuole solo suonare. Un giorno, mentre si esibisce per strada, la sua vista peggiora. Entra in un bar, Grand Morelos, e ordina una fetta di torta a Carmen, una cameriera messicana di 36 anni che si sente ignorata da tutti. Charlie si rivolge a lei come se fosse una cara amica. Lei finalmente si sente importante per qualcuno e con le parole giuste lo spinge ad andare a Manhattan per un momento di gloria. Ma è ormai troppo tardi per poterlo vedere con i suoi occhi.

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT: Charlie represents the projection of my fears. What if I have no talent and someday I will wake up old and broken realizing that I wasted my whole life? What if my chance will never come, and I will be too blind to understand when it is time to give up and look for something else? A disease could be the best way to understand that the time is running out and that life is short: if I want something, I’d better get it now, not tomorrow. I imagined myself in that situation, and I tried to figure how I would react if I had an illness that would urge me to give up as a filmmaker.

NOTE DELL'AUTORE: Charlie rappresenta la proiezione delle mie paure. E se non avessi talento? E se un mattino mi svegliassi vecchio e fallito e realizzassi di aver sprecato la mia vita? E se non arrivasse mai l'occasione che sto aspettando? Una malattia potrebbe essere il miglior modo per capire che il tempo vola e la vita è breve: se voglio qualcosa, meglio ottenerla oggi che aspettare domani. Ho immaginato me stesso in quella situazione e ho provato ad immaginare come reagirei se una sciagura mi costringesse ad abbandonare la mia passione di fare film.

Grand Morelos has the support of NYU's faculty, which includes award-winning filmmakers such as Spike Lee (Do the Right Thing, 25th hour), Todd Solondz (Happiness, Palindromes), John Tintori (Eight Men Out, True Love) and Tony Jannelli (The Silence of the Lambs, Independence Day).

Grand Morelos ha il supporto del corpo insegnanti della NYU, che include cineasti del calibro di Spike Lee (Fa' la Cosa Giusta, la 25^ Ora), Todd Solondz (Happiness, Palindromes), John Tintori (Otto Uomini Fuori, True Love) e Tony Jannelli (Il Silenzio degli Innocenti, Independence Day).

The production will be possible by the support and services of NYU including equipment, production insurance and post-production facilities.

Il film sarà realizzato grazie al supporto della NYU che mette al servizio dei suoi studenti le attrezzature, una polizza assicurativa e strutture adeguate alla post-produzione (montaggio).

Despite this support, additional funds are necessary to meet the budget needs: location fees, permits, art department, wardrobe, lighting, transportation, catering and, last but not least, publicity.

Nonostante questo supporto, un budget aggiuntivo è necessario per poter pagare i permessi per girare, le strutture in cui le riprese avranno luogo, la scenografia, i costumi, le luci, i trasporti, il catering e la promozione finale del corto.

  • NYU is already contributing a great deal. Without their help, equipment, insurance, and a deferred fee agreement with the Screen Actors Guild (the actors’ union), this film would easily quadruple in cost. Part of the experience of learning to make independent films, however, is fundraising and attracting patrons who believe in supporting independent filmmakers.

  • It’s important to us that Grand Morelos finds an audience. The primary showcase for short films is the film festival circuit. Cable networks are increasingly looking to short films to round out their programming, such as HBO and the IFC channel. There is also an active market for short films in the European digital broadcasting.

  • Unlike other art forms, films require more than a paintbrush or a typewriter to come into being – even the most modest film requires people, equipment, and resources. In the case of Grand Morelos, the talented crew is working for free because they believe in the project and its potential. These are professional crewmembers who are donating their time. The insurance, camera equipment, sound equipment, and editing facilities are provided by NYU as part of Marco’s tuition.

    So why do we still have to raise more money? The cast and crew will exceed 30 people. Everyone is working for free, but they still need food to eat during the 5-day shoot, as well as transportation. There are 4 private locations and we have to pay a fee in order to use them. There is a $ 300 fee to have the permit to shoot outdoor in NYC. There are costumes, props and sets. There are expendables such as batteries, light bulbs, gels etc...

    Needless to say, every corner that can possibly be cut without sacrificing quality is being cut. Whenever possible vendors are being asked to donate equipment, props and costumes. Your financial support will fill the gap between what we have invested, raised in cash and in-kind donations and what is needed to complete the film.
