A Jordanian Muslim woman and a non-Muslim American man, despite religious and cultural differences, risk everything to be together.
The most valuable thing in the universe is love. "Samira" is a story of forbidden love between a Muslim woman and a non-Muslim man. In the first 30 minutes we see Jim, a 13 year-old American boy, becoming assimilated into Jordanian culture and bonding with Samira, a 12 year-old Jordanian Muslim girl. They become closer when they have to fight off 4 Jordanian punks. Later, after Jim has almost been married and Samira has been married and widowed, they both attend UC Berkely at the ages of 20 and 21.
For the rest of the movie Samira and Jim deal with the tragedy of 9/11, they fall in love, become very intimate, want to marry and Jim ponders whether or not he believes in Islam, Jim batters 4 rufians who try to beat up Jamil, etc.
"Samira" has many elements which will help it succeed. It has a cross cultural love story between two peoples which, right now, seem to be very far apart. It depicts the tragedy of 9/11 and shows how it was devastating to both the Arab and American cultures. It shows an Indian Sikh receiving a terrible beating for having the gall to wear a beard and a turban. It addresses the barbaric practice of "honor-killing" which still goes on in Jordan. It has a reasonable solution to the Palestinian/Israeli conflict. It has a couple of good fights. Above all, Samira is a passionate love story that will move you to the depths of your soul.
