About this project

WE HAVE MET OUR Kickstarter goal-- HOWEVER, EVERY LITTLE BIT HELPS, SO PLEASE DONATE IF YOU CAN! We will use it for the overall film budget!

NEWS FLASH! http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/11353/1197897-53-0.stm?cmpid=fooddining.xml

Progression is a feature-length narrative film project, set in Lawrenceville, shot in Lawrenceville and about a real-life Lawrenceville institution: the 27-year-old progressive dinner, which began with about 15 friends and has become a community event with more than 150 participants. Written by Gab Cody and Sam Turich (residents of Lawrenceville-- Sam's great grandparents lived and ran a bar in Lawrenceville), Progression will come to the big screen with production support provided by Jonathan Joseph.

Progression, a feature-length ensemble comedy, follows a group of urban pioneers navigating love and heartbreak on the night of the annual “progressive dinner” in and around Lawrenceville, the hippest neighborhood in Pittsburgh.  Dubbed “a gentrification farce,” this film features arty young professionals colliding with the fourth-generation locals who watch bemusedly as their neighborhood transforms under their noses.

Progression is based on the real-life yearly LUPS (Lawrenceville Urban Pioneer Society) event, when over one hundred denizens of Lawrenceville open their homes to each other for food, wine and laughter.  Every participant attends a soup course at one home, then a salad course at another, and finally an entrée at a third.

This film features three soups, two salads, and culminates in a raucous single entrée where secrets are revealed, true love is conceived or destroyed, and a baby is delivered on the dining room table.  The tone of the film is urbane and witty, with some slapstick thrown in for good measure.  The filmmakers pay stylistic homage to the great screwball comedies of 1930s American cinema, as well as the mannered farces perfected by French New Wave auteurs.

The process of creating the film will engage a large number of young people in the region as actors and production staff, providing them with valuable experience that they can parlay into future work on the many Hollywood films that shoot in Pittsburgh.

A successfully funded Kickstarter campaign will allow the filmmakers to begin the preproduction process of casting, securing locations, creating the design where applicable and hiring additional production staff.  Funds raised through the Kickstarter campaign will go towards offsetting the film's overall $34,000 budget.   Additional funds raised above the Kickstarter amount of $7,500 will allow for the film's schedule to be accelerated.

You may be thinking, "What happens if they don't raise the entire budget?"  Well, we've brought many other projects to fruition, and we know how to get things done.  We will without a doubt eventually raise the full budget and produce the film.  This film means the world to us, and we will make it happen.  The only question is, how long will it take?  We thank you kindly in advance for your support.

Connected as Gab Cody (875 friends)

Gab Cody is a seriously funny playwright and filmmaker. She uses her skills as a storyteller and producer-- as well as a classically trained actor, improviser and standup comedian-- to create hilariously brain-agitating works. Her plays, films and live shows-- whether inspired by commedia dell'arte, Nietzsche's philosophy, 1930’s screwball comedy or 1960’s horror films-- are always funny and insightful. Her credits include the cult hit short film Mombies, the original stage comedies Crush the Infamous Thing, Prussia: 1866, Fat Beckett and The Sisters Grey, and regular appearances on WDVE’s The Jim and Randy Show.

Sam Turich is a director, writer and actor. With Gab Cody he co-created Mombies, which screened at film festivals across America and Europe, and the original stage comedy Crush the Infamous Thing: The Adventures of the Hollywood Four, which had its world premiere at the Coconut Grove Playhouse in Miami after workshops at the Williamstown Theatre Festival and Urban Stages in New York. Sam played the lead in Kyle Jarrow’s Armless, winner of the Best Overall Production Award at the New York International Fringe Festival. In New York, Sam was a writer and performer in Weekly Review, the original news-parody musical.
