Welcome ... and Thank You!

Well, here we are, after a little more than a year of preparation, ready to go to press on a 120-page, full-color, quarterly magazine about the beauty, magnificence, fragility, and desperate needs of the world we call home. The Sumerians called her Tiamat. Elder Cultures always call her Mother. To us she is Earth, Terra, Gaia. She is home, nourishment, beauty, inspiration. And she's having major problems.

Journal of the Earth is our contribution toward solutions for the difficulties that face the Earth and the human family whose continuance depends upon her.

Two Melded Perspectives ...

Some 125,000 generations down the homo sapiens family tree, the five generations alive now will determine the destiny of a planet besieged by massive numbers of us employing some very out-of-harmony ways of doing things. When we thought it through, we identified two areas we think require special attention and designed our magazine around these needs.

1. The Knowledge Chasm

First, most of the world's people don't understand the processes of Earth very well, because they've had so little training in it. Even in industrialized nations, understanding about the functions of the Earth — and the implications of overpopulation and large-scale human interactions with the ecosystem — is minimal.

When we try to remedy an incomplete education in the press, we run into page-space limitations. A science article, like a news article in general, is probably limited to about 800 words. And the writings of the scientists themselves are mostly relegated to the peer-reviewed journals the rest of us don't read, so the scientists rarely have an opportunity to talk to us directly.

But what if we gave them a much larger space in which to tell us what we need to know? We're going to give them that chance — and we're also going to give it to the world's best science and climate journalists.

2. A Fateful Disconnection of Psyche and Nature

There are always unintended consequences of success. Many of us now live in human-structured environments that occult the natural cycles of Nature. Add to that the Cartesian model of thinking, which tends to distance us from the natural world and to reverse the natural order of things.

As a species that can't eat light and drink darkness — on a planet light years from the nearest star system that might support us — we are completely dependent on the Earth for life. But the way we view things now, we're prone to think of the Earth as an object to be employed rather than as a system with which to live in harmony.

Exploring how we think— and how differently peoples around the world have thought throughout history — helps us shift paradigms and come up with fresh perspectives — some entirely new, some recapturing powerful orientations from the past, and some absolutely transcendent.

Getting Our Brains Together ... Pun Intended

Journal of the Earth is a magazine for both sides of the brain: our joyously logical and splendidly goal-oriented left brain, the esteemed achiever that has invented so much — and our right brain, so magnificently attuned to timeless values, underlying rhythms and cycles, and the ability to think outside ourselves and beyond our own lifetimes. We need both.

The educational philosophy of Journal of the Earth is that information given in a format that engages both sides of the brain simultaneously engenders rapid learning, refined comprehension and enhanced retention and offers much deeper personal enrichment in a process of learning that was always meant to be a joy.

Our Nautical Twilight page includes weather data, twilight specifics from astrometrician Dr. Kenneth Seidelmann, a poem from Rumi, and a hat-tip for Coyolxauhqui —“Golden Bells" — the Aztec Goddess of the Moon.

Lush with Image, Flush with Courage ... Issues Beyond the Headlines and Soundbites

Crises seem to beleaguer us in ever-proliferating numbers: ocean crust oil exploration, runaway genetic modifications, a garbage patch in the Pacific the size of a continent, CO2 build-up in the atmosphere, ice and glacier degradation that threatens the loss of the albedo that keeps the planet cool.

Journal of the Earth explores one or two of our most pressing problems, from a myriad of perspectives, in each issue, devoting as many as 20 pages to explorations that give us the information to make informed decisions.

It's Far from Over. There are 32,000+ oil wells in the Gulf, 2,900+ of them "killed" and unmonitored. In our 1st issue, we examine ocean currents, dangerous methane deposits in the earth's crust, and the stunning toxicity of dispersants. Photo: NOAA

Honorable Advertising

Our target audience runs from the Curious Adolescent through the Elder Sage. But children are going to love this magazine, too, for its spectacular photography, maps, and charts. We do not carry advertising for products known to be unhealthful for people or the environment. There will be NO advertising in this magazine that targets children.

An advertising spread from the first issue: Illustrations and images from Sigrid Frensen (Netherlands), Cindy Diaz (Mt. Shasta), and Dr. Anna Maria Gardner (Washington State).

Where the Money Goes

We're going to have money going to out for writing, editing, digital cartography, prepress, printing (the lion's share), advertising, and lists from the ALA, the American Library Association. Because we are an educational magazine, we are perfect for libraries that serve teenagers, college students and adults. These lists are expensive, but they are unquestionably worth it.

The Sky's the Limit

We are indebted to the scientists, journalists, photographers, cartographers, mathematicians, poets, artists, painters, anthropologists and psychologists who donated their work for free to ensure that this concept makes it.

We also want to offer our profound thanks to all of you for advancing the possibility that others will be able to see the work you've had a glimpse of here today. We hope you will be a part of our family for a very long time.

FOR YOUR KIDs / GRANDKIDS ... A DEDICATED COLOR SPREAD. A reader's spread is the two pages of a magazine that you see when you open it up. You know, left page and right page is ... well ... one visual image. In the Journal we have what we call Teaching Spreads, in which a full-bleed image spreads across the two pages and in that one visual tableau there is information about the subject coming from two scientific and two humanities angles. ... If you choose this one, a small but very visible rectangle will appear on the spread that follows this format: Sema and Ismet Akyol have donated this page to their grandchildren, Sheherezade, Ahmet, Ceren, and Deniz. Parents/grandparents will receive a framed color print of the full-sized page, and each of the kids will receive a smaller plaque of the image that bears her/his individual name. These rewards are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, the first three in the inaugural issue. The others, three each, will appear in the following three issues, winter, spring and summer 2013.

PATRON SAINT. In addition to all the physical goodies, a place on the Advisory Council, and the eternal subscriptions, your name will always be in publishers block as a patron of the magazine. You'll be invited to yearly meetings where we talk about where the planet is going, about cinema projects — the first of which is Hozho, which explores the Navajo concept of Nature — and about engagement of the magazine with the larger world. This is not meant to be a purely American or Western magazine, and as we move forward, we want to engage those from all over the world to tell their stories and express their concerns. People capable of making this level of contribution are typically very successful people in one life stream or another or have been involved in philanthropy for some time. Both groups are often drawn to issues that transcend their personal welfare and extend to the world at large. If you decide to contribute at this level, we profoundly appreciate the money. We are just as interested in your sage counsel, know-how, and perception as we plot the future course of the magazine, its cinema, and its books. Our first meeting will likely take place at Yosemite National Park with a side trips to the forest home of John Muir and the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias. We'll also be inviting engaged entrepreneurs, inventors, tribal Elders, poets, painters, lawmakers, musicians, scientists, mythologists, economists, psychologists, theologians, and philosophers. Bring hiking shoes ... and a really good camera. [s]
