Meet my printer
When I took a photogravure class a couple of years ago at Rayko Photo Center, I had no idea I would become smitten with the process.
I had been struggling with several of the images as digital prints and was not happy with how they were coming out. When I took the photogravure class, I knew that gravure was going to be the way to go. Afterwards, I investigated doing it all on my own. But the costs of paper, ink, needing a darkroom and having to have a decent press were prohibitive. Especially since I am a very novice printer. Not the time to go jump into buying a press that costs several thousand dollars.
So I did the next best thing, I asked Unai San Martin if he would work with me to do this series. He said yes, and we have been working together for the last year.
Unai is an award winning master printer and photographer in his own right. Originally from Spain, Unai currently works in the Bay Area. Over the last year, we have printed proofs and the beginnings of the edition at several presses including the press owned by Stefan Kirkeby at Smith Andersen North, the presses at Kala Instutite and at the artists live-work space in San Rafael where Unai keeps his studio.
We still have a ways to go to complete the project but I know it is in a far better place because of the collaboration with Unai.

We will make digital negatives and then create cyanotype images. You will walk away with one to two negatives for contact printing and up to 3 prints (depending on time). We will discuss photograms and contact printing, printing with a UV box and the sun and other techniques. Paper and chemicals provided.
