Dear Kickstart Sponsors,
A feature we decided on early in Bulge's software design was a robust "Undo" capability.
This choice was determined by a combination of factors: the platform, the range of play environments, and the subject matter.
One of the beauties of the iPad's touch screen is its immediacy and responsiveness. Taps are easy, with direct result. Unfortunately the interface is also prone to random bumps and unintended touches: think pocket-dialing. People also tend to use mobile devices in unstable places (e.g. cars, planes).
For some applications a wrong tap isn't a big deal. For a lengthy, linear simulation, however, it can be. No one wants an afternoon's hard campaigning to be decided by an accidental train lurch sending the 101st Airborne or 1st SS Panzer into certain doom.
Also, many players will learn the game on the fly, picking up the rules as they go along. The ability to try, and take back, alternative moves makes it easier to experiment with the game and see how things work. This capability meshes well with Bulge's combat preview: if you don't like the range of results from a potential battle you can add units or fight somewhere else. This flexibility is important in a computer game with no printed Combat Results Table to consult beforehand: it's great that the tablet calculates odds and adjudicates results, but players need enough transparency to develop strategy.
Consequently Bulge has multiple layers of Undo, allowing a player to take back multiple units' actions and test different ideas. This flexibility extends right up until combat is executed: once a battle is fought the results are fixed and time moves on.
One of the characteristics differentiating turn-based strategy from other gaming genres is that it is deliberate. A deep Undo capability helps ensure that the outcome of a game of Bulge depends on their strategies, rather than random taps or their mastery of the interface.
