About this project

In February of this year, I traveled to a small village outside of Arusha, Tanzania in East Africa. While I was there, I taught English to 3 to 5-year-olds at an orphanage/school, worked with local widowed women to help them build up their tourism business, taught French at a vocational school, and did home visits with HIV+ women and children in the community.

In Tanzania, the average annual income is around $200. A large portion of the population is affected by HIV/AIDS. Many don't have enough money to feed their children, and a trip to the clinic is usually too expensive. A lot of children go without adequate medical care.

The idea of The Picture Peace Project is that, once I return to Tanzania in January, I would oversee the creation of a huge mural in the shape of a peace symbol. The kids and I will collect bottle caps and use them to design and build the mural.

100% of the money will go directly to the TAMIHA Foundation ( www.tamiha.org ) which runs the orphanage. I have already raised enough money to get myself there as well as cover my living expenses.

Examples of where your donations will go:

$150 feeds every child at the orphanage/school for one month.

$150 will provide 18 HIV+ women and their children with food and cooking oil for one month.

$20 pays for an overnight stay at the local clinic, including medication for malaria, and can quite literally save a life.

$120 buys 100 chicks, which the women can raise and later sell for a huge profit.

$100 buys a sewing machine for the vocational school.

Hey all!

I'm a 23-year-old Kent State University grad and I just got back from spending two months in northern Tanzania, where I volunteered working with widows and orphans affected by HIV/AIDS. It was the best experience of my life, and I recently deferred acceptance into law school so that I would be able to go back this year.

I was involved in some amazing projects while I was in Tanzania. Besides working with the orphanage I taught French at a vocational school where I worked with older teens from the community. I also did home visits with HIV+ women and their children. I worked with women who were widowed due to AIDS--they started their own tourism business, and we helped to get it off the ground.

I love to travel, and can't wait to go back to Tanzania! Right now I'm just working and fundraising for my return trip. Thanks so much for checking out my project! Much love!
