We need your help to rewire and winterize the Freight Shed so we can move our farmers market here in our downtown by November 1 2012.
Freight Shed + Winter Farmers' Market + Youth Boat Building + Music + Bicycles + River Ecology + Rough Space for making things happen at the heart of our little city..
Help us save our Freight Shed. We are preserving the only remaining 19th century freight shed in the City of Bath, Maine. Bath is a place with a vibrant working waterfront, but this historic building has been neglected for years and in desperate need of revitalization. Located right on the riverfront in the heart of downtown Bath, The Freight Shed is the ideal structure to support community, local food and enrich the neighborhood.
What we have done:
Our grass roots efforts have already led to two summers of youth boat building programs at The Freight Shed. Now with your help we can bring this building to life year round. Our farmers market enjoys being in the downtown in the summer but there is no place to accommodate them there in the winter. In October they gave The Freight Shed a test run - and it was a huge success! More families than ever came. We know that this location will bring lots of people to the farmers market and will expand community market opportunities, small business incubators, bicycle rentals, private and community events, education and workshops… the possibilities are very exciting and we welcome your input into this highly collaborative process!
What needs to be done:
We have had incredible support this last year, but there is still much work to be done! We must make repairs to the foundation, roof and walls as well as mechanical systems. Our local electrical technology students began rewiring the building in January - they are a great crew but they need materials. We also must winterize the building so it can be used year-round. When completed the Freight Shed will demonstrate energy efficiency, building re-use and the potential for people to take action and make meaningful change in their community!
