The Idea Behind Steward:

Steward is a monthly briefing that covers the most dynamic stories in current affairs, technology, culture, travel, design, and fashion in the Asia Pacific. From the social media trends among Malaysian youth to the most promising new faces in Japanese architecture, from the best vintage shops in Seoul's up-and-coming neighborhoods to how local fisherman could accidentally trigger armed skirmishes or worse, Steward will deliver content relevant to the cosmopolitans and the business professionals, the travelers and the culturally curious.

The Background:

Over the years, the people who now make up Steward moved East from around the world.  And while we’ve witnessed how fast the countries around us are changing, we’ve realized there is a gap between what we see and the stories we read. Elements of the region are well reported by the mainstream media, but we feel that there’s a whole range of stories being left out of the picture. The Asia Pacific is home to more than half of the world’s population and is undergoing major economic, social, and cultural changes. These changes deserve their own perspective. Not from the outside looking in, but from the inside looking out.

We have a versatile team of editors, journalists, photographers, and designers, and we are tapping into a network of correspondents who have written for such organizations and publications as The Economist, Time, Wired, Monocle and others, from across the region.

Where We Are Now:

What started as an ambitious idea last summer has finally taken shape. Steward has moved from a conceptual sketch on a napkin to a fully functioning prototype for the iPad and Android tablets. But we’re going to need your help to go even further and make Steward the magazine we know it can be. We see amazing stories all around us that, for reasons related to space, editorial choices, or simple distance from the action, don't get to see the light of the day in the existing media landscape. With your donation, we can tell them, using both compelling writing and great visuals on a cool new medium. Are you on board?
