Time has always been the enemy of art. In this series art is going on the offensive and reclaiming the rundown places of the midwest.
First things first, my name is Josh and I am excited that you have decided to check out my project. I know there are many great ideas to get behind here on Kickstarter and I am honored that you are giving mine an in depth look.
This is the old intro...cool music and pictures, bad, bad narration. A friend told me I sound like Bob Ross though. God, he had great hair and he painted the friendliest trees.
- I have to rely on strangers because as you can see below my son is already shirking his duties.-
I moved to Minnesota to help with my Dad's end of life care. I never pictured myself as the small town guy, but after almost four years out here, I have to say it grows on you. And as you can see, this rural setting has become my muse. I am obsessed with all the wonderful architecture and the everyday places, that are only everyday when you are out here in the sticks.
I have found so much hidden beauty and dusty wonder out here that I am compelled to share it. My desire to capture and protect these places has become paternal in a weird way. I want future generations to be able to see the past before it is consumed by time and lost forever.
In general, time is kind of a downer. That may sound like terrible motivation for an art project, but this time around we are going to turn the tables on time. Together we are going to steal the food of the ages right off of times table. With the click of a shutter we are going to save many beautiful places from decay. At the same time, I want to breathe new life in to them with a kind of photographic CPR.
I am raising funds for a fine art series named Rundown Reclaim. It will feature images from across the Midwest (Minnesota, the Dakotas, Wisconsin, and a handful of other states) This series will be of rural and semi-urban sites/objects that have been forgotten and are in danger of being lost forever. Together we are going to reclaim them and pay homage to history by condensing many locations in to one rocking book.
It will take approximately six months for travel and image capture, another month or two of editing, and a final month of book design and layout.
The final result will include a gallery showing, fine art prints, and two printed versions of a book an ebook for iDevices. Assorted other items will also be made available, contingent on public response.
Local publication and national exposure are being sought after. The first being the most likely. If anyone has an "in" with the media I would certainly love for you to whisper in someone's ear for me. I am definitely no media mogul. I revised my press release at least ten times, because it didn't sound pressy enough.
Along the way, I will be taking suggestions for locations to preserve. I would like this project to be a community effort in which you (the backers) not only feel that you are along for the ride, but that you can help me put pins in the map.
Hell, if you want to come out to a location and see the process that would be awesome too. I would love to meet the folks that helped make this project come to life.
