About this project

CONCEPT.

This project explores the connotations and irony surrounding the idea of "wilderness" and what we deem as "wild." Is it really a physical place or is wilderness something intangible?

Using Cumberland Island and it's feral horses as the backdrop, the film raises the questions of what exactly is wild, where does this mysticism come from, and why do we separate ourselves from what we consider to be the natural world?

PURPOSE.

The purpose for the film is to question and provoke critical thinking using stunning visuals to engage the audience. The medium is more accessible to today's generation and a topic that may have previously been written into an essay format may now instigate more interest as a short film.

The target audience is primarily university and high school level students to encourage the questioning of definitions and "facts." But I think the concept is universal and can reach a pretty broad range of ages. Most anyone can define wilderness when asked, and I found the majority of the answers to be very similar. However, there were very few who looked into how the definition they were giving could actually measure up nor what they were really saying with their words.

DONATIONS.

I started this idea back in Spring (2011) and have since made several trips out to the island, dived into research, attended two festivals and had a ridiculously wonderful number of discussions about wilderness.

As my senior thesis film, I have invested my time and funds into creating a solid and effective project. As I'm nearing the end of production, I will be delving into perfecting the script and technical aspects. I will be working on this project throughout the year, with the completion date set for May of 2012. What I have to look forward to is the last trips to Cumberland to solidify the final frames, the writing and rewriting of the new script, work with a professional voice actor to narrate, color correction, sound design, a new score composed and recorded, festival fees, DVD design and creation, poster and marketing design and website construction.

As the introduction to a series of films or a feature length production of the concept of wilderness, "Whose Wilderness Is It?" is just the beginning. If this is a subject or overall idea you would like to be a part of, please donate to help make the film possible.

Studying Film and Photography at the Savannah College of Art and Design, Gabby will graduate in the spring of 2012 and off into the world of documentary filmmaking and travel photography.
This is a pretty vague world to go off into, leaving her open to wherever that may take her. But with a balance between conceptual films and simple storytelling, she strives to use these mediums to the fullest.
