whats up Chris, did you gave up ?
Creator Sjors Provoost on September 12, 2010
If you try fundraising again, perhaps you can also offer revenue sharing for investors?
Creator Sjors Provoost on September 12, 2010
Do you plan to try this again?
You could also try to apply for Y-Combinator, since they are explicitly looking for Development on Handheld startups: http://ycombinator.com/rfs5.html

I totally disagree with "Michael Whalen". A text editor with support for language specific highlighting would be of great use for many developers of all kind.
Many of us don't have our development servers on our every day computer, or even user remote servers for development.
You can edit Ruby, PHP, etc, remotely without the need to have a local server in your computer.
This app has a great potential of being useful for editing code when you're on the go. You could edit files directly from your development server or get into your client's server to fix something right away.
I've needed to do that a million times and I always used a text editor in my notebook. You don't always need to have a server on the same computer you code.
Also, it's great for when you have an idea and want to start coding right away, even if you can't test the code or compile it yet. A source code text editor would be great in those cases.

This app would be invaluable on the iPad for developers, especially if it had sftp built in. Similar competitors don't seem to have anything but ftp. As far as all the noise about build environments, etc., I can remote into my machines for that. As long as I can pull source files from wherever I am and edit them locally, I'm more than happy.

Um, what about a browser-based editor like Bespin - https://bespin.mozillalabs.com/? That seems to work well. Still in beta but. How different will yours be?

In terms of the productivity value of this app - I would strongly assert that it would be insanely valuable as a productivity tool. I could imagine doing plenty of work on a basic code editor like this (mostly front end work, mind you: HTML, CSS, JS). But especially if it has SVN or GIT or at least FTP support, being able to work on my coding from the platform of an iPad opens up tons of potential and value.

I think the app'd be usable with the on-screen keyboard, but I'm more interested in using something like this with a bluetooth keyboard. With a capable application & hardware setup, you _could_ get serious work done with an iPad.

$30,000 is a little outrageous of you ask me. Unfortunately there isn't much value in an app like this on the iPad. Most modern development either requires a build process, or a local development environment. It's stated (obviously) that code that requires a build process is out of the question, but, unless you're doing a simple static website, the iPad is useless for web dev.
Any rails apps, django apps, even a simple PHP app, requires a server to operate. An old method of development involves using an FTP server and editing, pushing, testing, editing, pushing, testing, but that's horribly inefficient and only works with PHP. If you're a Django/Rails dev you just can't work like that. The iPad can't run a modern website locally, so developing on it would be useless.
Let's not forget how hard these things are to type on. I think the iPad is a great idea and awesome novelty, but if you're a web professional or any kind of developer, it's just a toy. You can't work on an iPad in this regard.
I look forward to you proving me wrong, but all odds are against you.

I know it seems like a lot of money to raise to build this, but it would take time and there'd certainly be an expectation for Chris to support/enhance the app once released. For me, supporting development of this app is a no brainer. I hope you'll feel the same way.
