Open this box and out pops JAK the Ripper in tutu and taps. Guitar totin’ Jeremiah Aidan Kriep blossoms into a socio-slash-psychopath.
KRiEp was conceived on a beautifully balmy winter’s evening. Sam, John and Carmen, (John’s wife), were sitting on a bench in the middle of Broadway at 67th street….killing time. John happened to mention his current side project Serious Fun. Carmen grimaced, “Oh, you mean the one with that creepy poetry?” Taking his cue from Carmen, Sam began to parody John’s psycho-poetry. Carmen’s grimace soon turned to one of laughter. Eventually, arm in arm, our intrepid merry-makers continued their journey on to Merkin Hall for an evening of modern American song. The next day John phoned Sam and said Carmen was now haunted by the fact that Sam, who had asked all the right “questions” about the poetry, was the only person she knew who could write music for a show about a sociopathic personality. Sam, much to his chagrin, was soon introduced to John’s psychotic nightmare visions which have now been haunting everyone for the past thirteen months.
The original poems were penned by John during the early 1990’s in a purgative burst after spending approximately three years immersed in the works of novelists such as James M. Cain, Jim Thompson, and James Ellroy. Hammel channels the seedier undercurrents of the American experience and how this type of individual permeates our cultural consciousness and is in turn exploited by the forces which drive our sound bite-obsessed society. What inspired Sam were the visceral atmospheric images evoked by the poems. Music poured out of Sam’s fevered imagination and virtually leapt onto the page. By the end of summer 2011, KRiEp was born!
We have now been given the gift of opportunity to see KRiEp presented on stage as a part of The New York International Fringe Festival – FringeNYC A production of The Present Company August 10th – 26th.
As you know, producing a show requires a great deal of energy, time AND expense. At the ripe old age of 60 or 120 added together, we’re running out of all of the aforementioned! We’ve been graced with a marvelous talent pool of actors, singers, dancers and techies. They have graciously donated their time and talents to this project. Nevertheless, there are considerable expenses involved and this is where you all come in.
To defray the thousands of dollars necessary to put this humble little production together we need your generous help and support. We have been encouraged by the response from our workshop audience and experienced theatrical professionals who feel that this show and this music needs to be heard by a wider audience. Will the world be a better place with or without KRiEp? That’s not for us to say. But it wouldn’t hurt.
So with your help, we’d like to present
Seven Deadly Scenes

John Hammel & Sam Belich.

Choreography by Kendra Slack
KRiEp is the fictional journey of a serial killer as told through the eyes and stages of his life: Jake (an old man), Jerry (a young man) and Jak (a teen). Interwoven into the story line are his interactions and relationships with our societal institutions of family, religion, the press, the law, the medical community and the police. Our artistic aim is to portray in song, dance and drama the fascination and internecine ways in which society exploits serial killers and their victims. We want our audience to leave the theatre tapping their toe, whistling a tune and pondering the question:
Is the evil that men do a fabric from which we are all cut, or do we wear it simply as a matter of choice?
