Leveling your troops

Update #6 · Oct 15, 2012 · 6 comments

While heroes in Saga Kingdoms gain levels, troops instead will gain ranks. The best way of leveling your troops will be to take them into combat.

At the end of each battle all heroes and troops in the preceding battle will gain experience depending on the enemies faced, regardless of how each unit performed during that battle or if they even survived the engagement. If you are victorious in you will gain bonus experience.

When your troops gain ranks, they will increase in effectiveness by gaining additional health, armor, damage and in some cases other stats such as movement speed. We are even considering units that morph as they gain ranks, although those will not be present in beta.

Unlike the original game SAGA, in Saga Kingdoms, troops will not lose ranks when they are moved to another unit. You may also have troops of varying ranks in the same unit.

•     Green - This is the level where most troops begin. Green troops have seen few if any battles and are anxious to get to the fight.

•     Regular - Troops will achieve this rank after only a few battles. All troops should be able to return from a couple days out in the field with this level of experience.

•     Veteran - Troops who have seen many battles will achieve veteran status. It may take a week or more even for the most dedicated commander to raise his troops to this level.

•     Elite - This is the final rank achievable by troops in Saga Kingdoms. It will take hundreds of engagements for a troop to reach this level of expertise, but the resulting strength will be well worth the effort.

You do not need to kill all the enemies during each quest to gain maximum experience. As long as you complete the quest objective, you will gain experience for each enemy unit present.

Some of you may be asking exactly how much stronger is an Elite archer than a green one? Currently the answer is about 50%, however we will need the feedback of thousands of players during beta to find final numbers that make the effort rewarding while keeping the game challenging.

      Thanks Rob.

One of the best innovations in MMO's came when gaining experience and finding treasure shifted from grinding mobs to completing quests and defeating bosses. We feel this is especially important for an MMORTS game because even the name (Strategy) implies correct execution of tactics, which should be rewarded.

So just to reiterate: Failing still allows for some exp but no loot, but winning offers the kill exp + completion exp, and loot, correct?

@Robert, Don't get me started on the battle server. That was one of the main reasons I was so excited about the Unity engine. We had amazing success with Unity and our pirate game, Captains of Darktide.

If you fail a quest you will still get experience based on the units you killed before failing. The successful completion of the quest and resulting rewards are always your goal, once accomplished, players want to get to the next exciting encounter.

We want to reward players for successfully executing a winning strategy, because of this, the majority of the experience will come from completing the quest anyway. Do you really want to be forced to chase down every last opponent for an extra 5%?

That being said, we will be listening to feedback. If players want to either not get experience for enemies left alive or receive a bonus for clearing every last stray kitten, we will consider all suggestions.

I disagree with giving experience for troops NOT killed. I think you kill troops to get experience for your own troops. Also having to complete the quest to get experience is wrong. If the quest fails, player should still get experience for troops killed before failing quest. Provided there will still be resurrection of troops in this new game. The prize for completing the quest is the reason for finishing the quest! And they better be good prizes too! I say this as even with all the promises made on the original Saga game the battle server still has a horrible record of failing during a mission. So if in battle, you kill a troop experience for players troops is immediately accredited to player.
