Unit creation explained
Our mantra when looking at game mechanics is “Simplified Complexity” which to us mean making every aspect of the game easy to use and understand while at the same time adding an underlying layer of complexity for gamers to discover.
For Saga Kingdoms, we wanted to do something really special for unit creation, by putting in a layer of hero to troop to unit interaction.
Here are some specific examples.
Lets say player A wants to create a unit that is extremely resistant to range damage.
This player starts with a hardy hero who has high health and armor and an ability that heals the unit he leads. The player then adds 3 siege giants, which are high health units that do extra damage to walls. Then adds 4 shield bearers who reduce range damage by 5% each, finally he completes the unit with 3 paladins whose ability is to place a shield on the unit equal to 10% of the total health of the unit when they reach 50% health.
The above combination creates an extremely hardy unit that takes 20% reduced range damage, shields itself for 30% total health (which is a large amount thanks to the siege giants) when they are at half their HP’s, gets healed by the hero above half and then gets shielded again.
A player who doesn't care about min maxing and just wants to enjoy the game can make a unit with 10 paladins, who shield themselves for 100% of their health, or maybe throw in a few warrior maidens because their chance to stun is fun. No combination is wrong, and each one does well in some situations.
Player B wants is trying to find a unit that does extreme damage and doesn’t care about defense.
This player starts with a hero whose ability is to send his units into a berserk frenzy doing 50% bonus damage but with a 50% chance to attack a random unit in range. He starts with 5 Orc assassins who give the unit 5% chance at a critical hit, then adds in 5 snipers who increase the range of the unit by 4%.
This player may realize that when the berserk ability is used the increases range actually puts too many allied troops in harms way and maybe he should have chosen a troop that deals bonus damage on critical hits, or maybe that was his plan all along and another unit in his army does increased damage when they are hurt.
This is only a taste of the possibilities. There are many more troop abilities for you to discover, undead units who can cause enemies to flee in panic, diabolists who poison units with various effects, orc arsonists who set units on fire, and a host of abilities that affect the damage you deal and receive. We’ll leave the rest for another update and for you to discover in the game.
Saga Kingdoms already has more troop types than any RTS we’ve ever seen. This system of troop to unit interaction, increases the variety of unit types to staggering numbers, however players who simply want to use their coolest troops and throw them together into an army can still do so and later enjoy and discover the unique interactions that will result.

There will never be a perfect unit, just good units for specific tasks.
Lets say you build what you think is the perfect cavalry unit. What does this really mean? Fastest move speed? Most damage on charge? Most damage after charge? Most damage against high armor units? Most damage against low armor units? Best at avoiding magical damage? Best at avoiding range damage? There are just too many factors to make a perfect unit possible, otherwise the game would end as soon as you built one. At best you could build a unit really good at performing a certain number of tasks.
Instead it is a lot more beneficial and fun to build a balanced army and then use tactics during combat to best exploit your opponents weaknesses and utilize your own strengths.

Sounds great by me! Even if someone creates perfect unit at something, likely if they are against another player, a unit designed to exploit the weaknesses of the previous could be made. Understanding the psychology of the players you are going against could be interesting. : P

Also as you may recall Des, your army can have multiple units, so its not just about making the perfect unit but making a balanced army that works well together.

For me (slava) this is the death of my productivity for weeks after we launch. I can already see sitting at a spread sheet trying to figure out how to make the perfect unit, then coming back to my spreadsheet when I realize I was missing 3 or 4 factors I had not counted on.
The unit window will show all the effects in real time, so you will be able to see exactly what effect adding a troop with high dpg has on your unit as opposed to adding a troop with lower dps but one that gives the entire unit bonus critical chance.

This is what i was looking for as far as unit customization when i first saw it hinted. By adding traits to unit types makes it even more exciting. It looks like there wont be an "always winning" combination, but will make players study their quest, environment, or opponent in order to successfully deploy their troops.
