Back in the Studio: The Second Record

Attention System has been writing and recording dance-infused rock and roll since late-2008. After a short, self-released EP recorded with home-brew equipment garnered favorable response, we packed our bags and played live shows steadily for nearly a year. Creative Loafing awarded the band the Readers’ Pick for Best New Rock Act of 2009. We released our first full-length album, Wait for My Signal, in April of 2010 on the Surrounded by Light imprint and got great response from both critics and fans.

Recording an Album

In the last few years, we’ve written a bevy of material and really thought about what we wanted to say with a sophomore record. We wanted it to be kinetic, danceable, thoughtful and rocking. We’ve pared the material we’ve written down into eight or nine tracks that we feel represent the sound and aesthetic we’ve been building with our live shows for the past three years, and it’s time to make a record out of them.

Your Money: Where does it go?

For the last album, we hired an audio engineer named Matt Washburn and rented his studio (Ledbelly Sound). We put every track on Wait for My Signal down in digital in four days. The total cost for the recording was around $2000; Brian mixed and mastered it himself.This time around, we’ve decided to neatly reverse that process. As per our constant litany of Tweets and Facebook updates, we’ve been recording this album a piece at a time for the last six months on a brand new mobile recording setup. Recording this way allowed us to really focus in on what we wanted to say, particularly Jason’s drumming and Josh and Jonathan’s guitars; the extra time allowed for a more robust and perfectionist experience.

With the money gained from this drive:

• We are extremely excited to announce that we’ve hired an amazing duo to produce, mix and master our new record: the Pullout Kings. Composed of Zach Solem (Slowearth) and Z. Marr (Combichrist), the two have just released a really great EP called Just the Tip. They’ve worked in the remix realm with an amazing cast of bands: IAMX, Combichrist, Aesthetic Perfection and many others. We’ve asked that they give Attention System the same electronic treatment they’ve become known for while stretching out a little and working in the rock realm as well, further hybridizing the core of our sound.
• Lastly, the production of the actual physical units of the album will come from the reserves left in this fund drive. We don’t feel that the project is truly completed without some kind of tangible thing; something you can feel and touch and unwrap.
• Any remaining funds, should we be so lucky, will go to the generals of keeping us on the road and in good shape to continue playing shows!

Everything is in place for the final push towards the new record except, of course, the money. The gear, the production team, the physical copies… all of these things add up! We cannot thank you all enough for the help you’ve given us financially and spiritually in every city we’ve been in, on every tour stop, here at home in Atlanta, in the studio or out.
