In the beginning...

there was a sawhorse; big, clunky, inefficient, and material intensive. There had to be a better way. A way for the horse to be refined, streamlined and tamed into a contributing member of modern society. That was the challenge posed by a senior design project; can you make a better sawhorse?

The problem could not be approached by focusing on the sawhorse alone. The solution would have to include not just the design but materials, manufacturing process, and whole user experience. 

The solution was found in the now patent pending joint. Based on:

• A flat, consistent material; plywood.
• Computer aided cutting (CNC router)
• No tools, hardware, or adhesives

the joint achieved the structural intent of a sawhorse but with a refined design. The system is made up of legs, top, and collar. The hooked legs attach to the top and brace against each other with interlocking teeth. The attached legs and top are then hugged together with the collar which locks the whole system into place. Held together by only tension and compression. (See instructional video below).

But problems with inefficiency are not limited to the construction industry. Being college students, we found that we were confronted with these same issues every year when we moved from apartment to apartment and the Intension Series was born...

The Intension Series

Revealing in its simplicity, practical, and mobile. Machine cut from top quality Baltic Birch plywood and hand finished with wipe-on oil stain and sealer. Undersides are painted with bold designs and colors in durable enamel. The result is a harmonious look that disassembles and packs flat for easy transport to keep up with the lifestyle of the new age nomad.

Material

By using a CNC Router we are able to achieve the joint's precision fit, while maximizing material efficiency. From one 4'x8' sheet of plywood we are able to produce two coffee tables or up to six counter height stools. This is where the coasters come in.  By strategically placing them in voids on the plywood, efficiency is greatly increased, producing less waste and acting as the first line of defense for your tabletops.

About Us

Chaz is an Environmental Design student at the University of Colorado. For his senior design project he created the tension/compression joint system and designed the Intension Series furniture line. 

Max is a Business student at the University of Colorado. With a team of students in his Entrepreneurship capstone course, he developed the business plan for a furniture design company based around the Intension Series.

Together we founded NewRado; an innovative furniture design company. Through hardware-free design and contemporary style, we provide simple furniture solutions for nomadic individuals.
