An unrelenting study into the lives of Theo and Alice, a recently split up couple.
What We Are Doing: My primary concern in making this short film is faces, faces, faces: how one's physiognomy betrays, expresses, and masks emotion.
It is an unrelenting study into the lives of Theo and Alice, a recently separated couple. We witness a conversation in which neither's words quite connect at the moment they need them to most. Weeks after Theo was exposed to Alice's infidelity, Alice returns to his place to pick up several articles that she left behind. This is the first time they've spoken since their break up. What ensues is bitterness, anger, spite, guilt, and unfortunately love as the two try to reconcile their complicated feelings with the reality of their situation.
Film is performance. It is a process, a documentary of its own making.
Holie Barker and Todd Bartels will play Alice and Theo. During the month left before the shoot, I will be rehearsing with my actors constantly. We will move through the arch of an entire relationship. They will have a first date, a second, a third, an anniversary. They will seduce each other, make each other laugh, offend each other, violate each other- in real life and off the camera. By the time we shoot, their eyes will betray all the complicated, confused emotion that any disappointed lover has. The shooting process itself will inspire spontaneity. The actors will have free range of movement, and the script will function primarily as a template, not an imposition.
