HOW FAR WOULD YOU GO TO SAVE IT ALL?

OUR STORY

Yasuni Man is a feature documentary that will expose a geopolitical conflict raging deep in the Amazon. Conceptually, the story resembles a true-to-life cross between the documentary Crude and the blockbuster Avatar — and it’s unfolding now.

Ecuador’s Yasuni Man Biosphere Reserve is home to three indigenous tribes. For 6,000 years they have survived by hunting and foraging in Yasuni’s dense rainforest. Two of the tribes — the Tagaeri and Taromenane — live in total isolation and have no peaceful contact with the outside world. Members of the Waorani tribe were successfully contacted only 50 years ago. At the time, the Waorani had the highest homicide rate of any known society.

Yasuni is not only home to some of the world’s last remaining uncontacted people — it’s also the most biologically diverse place on Earth. The sheer number of mammal, bird and amphibian species is unmatched anywhere on the planet. More species of trees live in one acre of Yasuni than exist in all of North America.

The lush jungle landscape is one of Earth’s most magnificent, dangerous and least understood.

Beneath it all lie vast fields of oil.

Energy companies are drilling and laying pipelines across Yasuni — laying waste to the forest, devastating the wildlife, and stoking violent conflict among the tribes. Roads built to access the oil have opened the forest to illegal settlement. A logger was speared to death in 2008.

Last August, the United Nations and world leaders teamed up with the government of Ecuador and signed a pact to protect Yasuni. But the initiative is fraught with risk. Most recently, President Raphael Correa was nearly killed in a conflict with his own police force.

The story of Yasuni Man will be told through the eyes of three Waorani brothers — Otobo, Conan and Caija — fighting to protect their home, their community and their way of life. In stunning HD, you will experience close interactions with the embattled Waorani — and heart-stopping encounters with endangered and deadly animals. You will learn how energy corporations are laying waste at the edges of Earth’s unknown, unfit politicians failing to stop it.

As a wildlife filmmaker who’s developed programming for National Geographic and PBS, Ryan Killackey has logged thousands of hours tracking and documenting Ecuador’s beautiful and deadly wildlife. He’s one of the few people in the world to maintain contact with the indigenous Waorani.

Help me tell their story, and together we can save Yasuni.

THE IMPACT

Shot on location in the deep Amazon, Yasuni Man will shine a spotlight on a global conflict over oil, fought between corporations, politicians, and indigenous tribes. Audiences will witness the destructive consequences of fossil energy dependence. Through close-up encounters with a stunning array of wildlife, audiences will see first-hand what’s at risk in this conflict. By learning that they have a stake in the fragile new initiative to protect Yasuni, audiences will be empowered to help save Earth’s most magnificent space.

WHAT WE NEED

We need to raise $30,000 in initial funding to go to the Amazon and film the first sequence. We’ll use this footage approach large donors who can finance the rest of our budget, including post-production editing. The more we raise, the better our production. You decide how far we go for our preliminary shoot!

Your contributions will go directly toward purchasing gear, assembling the crew, and providing logistical support needed to begin filming.
