I’m Erin Royer and I started Snug Organics 3 years ago when I couldn’t find warm pajamas for my son that weren’t covered in toxic flame-retardant chemicals.  After much research, I decided to design them myself.  I created warm and cozy sleepwear for babies and toddlers free of flame-retardants, pesticides and synthetic materials. I figured, by making a commitment to organic sleepwear, at least 50% of a child’s day could be spent in organics.

THE PROBLEM
Most children’s sleepwear is made of polyester (fleece), nylon acetate, modacrylic and rayon. These fabrics begin their lives as a vat of chemicals, including petroleum. They have a prolonged landfill life, create more dependence on oil and take 40% more energy to produce than cotton. They are not breathable and block out air sometimes causing the body to overheat. These synthetics can also emit toxic gasses and are allergenic, causing respiratory disease in some cases. Each of these synthetics must contain flame-retardants. 

Flame-retardants affect the thyroid, immune system, reproductive system, and liver. They disturb brain development, learning abilities, hormone function and can cause cancer, hyperactivity (ADD & ADHD), obesity, diabetes and permanent behavioral changes.  Flame-retardants are most prevalent in the United States. Concentrations of flame-retardants are 3 times higher in children than in their mothers. Their tiny bodies are not able to excrete toxins as easily as adults and their skin is thinner and highly absorbent. 

Most of the organic cotton sleepwear on the market is not warm enough and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that blankets not be used in cribs due to the risk of SIDS.

THE SOLUTION
We offer snug-fitting, GOTS-certified, 100% organic cotton sherpa and naturally flame-resistant 100% baby alpaca. These materials feel softer, last longer, and protect the developing systems of babies and toddlers. They are free of dangerous chemicals, they are breathable and allow for moisture absorption.  Most importantly, they are naturally warm and sustainable. 

WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP
With your support we will be able to GROW!  We keep running out of product and can’t keep up with demand.  We have done extensive research to find the right manufacturer who can execute the precise snug-fit measurements required by the CPSC for children’s sleepwear.  We have also worked tirelessly to find the most reliable source of the best organic fabrics and natural yarns available.  We need consistent production in large quantities to keep up with demand and new growth.  We have also added 100% baby alpaca sleepers to our product line due to customer requests for natural wool.  We hope to be able to continue to add a variety of sleepwear options in the future. We have all of this lined up, now we just need the funding to get the ball rolling!
