Update #52: Film Societies
We started the campaign in July and now the last breath of summer is with us and as the autumn comes there have been some exciting developments.
I attended a conference in London organised by BFFS (British Federation of Film Societies) entitled Film and Education. At the conference were film society leaders from across the UK, Wales and Scotland. The conference held at Cine Lumiere gave insight into the brilliant work being done by societies in the face of growing cinema complexes, which have commercial profits but which do not necessarily serve the communities they are located within.
One organisation which exemplifies this is Film Unit. Based in the north the society has been running for 60 odd years. They won the prize for best student society because of their brilliant outreach work which enables children with brain damage to watch films. They also work with disabled children and other groups who the commercial cinemas do not cater for. I met the head of the film society in Ayr, Scotland who has been running the society for 30 odd years. In Ayr they screen independent films and subtitled films some of which can only be seen in art house cinemas. Whilst in Chorley the film society screens commercial films which are sort after by their community members. They also get members to dress up as cowboys.
At a discussion the head of the Watford film society brought up an excellent question. When the film is screened how do we have a discussion? His point was that many people who attend the screenings are afraid to speak in public. Jean from Warwickshire answered his question by saying that at their film society the fear of public speaking was alleviated by nibbles and wine and so two hours after watching 'Notes on a Scandal' people were having lively discussions. It wasn't a case of let's watch and go, but more a case of let's watch, stay and talk. Jean is an academic who is pushing the boundaries of film education. For many at the conference being able to speak about films helps to develop confidence, compassion and critical awareness, something they have witnessed whilst teaching young people film.
So I'm happy to say that during the networking sessions, which really were more a case of let's meet and chat with some exemplary people I have been invited to screen the film, once finished, and give talks at a number of film societies across the UK, Wales and Scotland. This is very exciting because film societies unlike commercial cinemas offer people a space for discussion, education and in the case of Chorley, dressing up. The BFFS is also able to distribute the film to film societies which cater for cities and also rural communities.
