About this project

OUTLAWS is our story of Billy the Kid – the most notorious outlaw of the Wild West.- from his humble beginnings, to his rise to infamy and finally, his inevitable demise from the single shot of a gun at the young age of 21.It can also be said that OUTLAWS is the story of any teenage boy who lives during a time when the rules of society are unclear, guns are easily accessible and fame is celebrated regardless of how or why it is achieved.Driven by a heart-pounding rock score, this edgy new musical spins a tale of youth and friendship, fame and violence in America.First, the Billy the Kid story is the story of boys in America. It’s an allegory about how, as a society we have been told how to raise our boys and how boys are ‘supposed’ to be encouraged to act as the stoic American male: tough, resolute figure who keeps it all inside. Also, the Billy the Kid story is about our American romance of violence and guns. These two elements are fixtures of out American psyche. They are part of our legacy. So why are we surprised when teenage boys two centuries later are exploding with unfortunate and tragic results?Embracing these parallels, we created OUTLAWS.  Early on, we realized that the music we grew up with – rock – should be the music we should use to tell our story. The wild abandon and storytelling nature of rock seemed the perfect allegory for New Mexico’s untamed and lawless territory. As we continued to develop the story with the help of the very talented writer/director Joe Calarco (Broadway’s R & J) we stripped away any and all western clichés and focused on elements of the west that we would understand if we had been there ourselves. Using the conceit that the Wild West was not like the images we’d seen in the movies we decided to create our “own” west making dialogue as colloquial and as familiar as possible and have encouraged our entire production team to also see things from a different angle.

Our cast includes some of the hottest new talent in the world of New York Theatre, we have the break-out star of “Academy” Corey Boardman playing “Billy” with Isabel Santiago as his love interest. We have Tony winning scenic designer David Gallo (The Drowsy Chaperone) and Hugh Hysell from the award winning marketing team of HHC (Jersey Boys), helping us out. They have faith that our show has a future beyond the festival and want to be involved at the beginning.

The beginning is where we would ask you to get involved, we need to pay these amazingly talented people something: the actors, director/choreographer, musical director, rock musicians, scenic designer, lighting designer, costume designer, sound designer, stage manager, sound engineer, not to mention paying for rehearsal space and all things marketing and PR.

This is a chance to be in at the start and to give your support and help to us on our journey to being the next big musical sensation on Broadway. RENT, SPRING AWAKENING, AMERICAN IDIOT all pushed the Broadway envelope a little further, let’s continue it and give it a big push with OUTLAWS- The Ballad of Billy the Kid.
