A feature-length documentary exploring the innovations of entrepreneurs and small businesses.
The great experiment in capitalism, America's economic system, has always captivated me. It's a real-life game of movers and shakers that just about anybody can join -- anyone can create an empire in their garage.
In my previous documentary, Uphill Enterprise, I was inspired by the story about how the community of Cotati, California, came out to support The Hub Cyclery when a corporate rival tried moving into town. The strength of its connection to its local community was alone enough to thwart a Goliath.
Small business owners must employ alternative tools and tactics in order to survive on the same field as corporate giants, and they must often invent new methods to adapt to the changing field itself.
I want to explore this battlefield and find out what entrepreneurs are doing to ensure their survival, what they're up against, and what works. More importantly, I want to lend a voice to small business owners that will hopefully start a conversation among consumers and highlight what's at stake.
Uphill Enterprise (2012, 15 min)
Equipment rentals (lights, cameras), gas, food for any crew I need but can't pay for with anything other than food. Sometimes towns and cities require film permits. And just about anything else that could pop up. Murphy's Law: anything that can go wrong, will go wrong and at the worst possible moment.
I paid for Uphill Enterprise by myself, while I'm going to college. I have no more money, but I think this project is something people might like to get behind.
Just about anybody and everybody involved in inventing new ways to keep a small business alive and compete with giants. There is a line between businesses that can throw money at problems and those that have to think their way through tough situations and are good at it. I'm always going to stand beside the underdog, and I want to help by shining a light on those who don't have the means to buy their way out of problems.
