A short animated Navajo film by Brian Young
A long time ago, all birds were without color. One day, however, the gods allowed all the birds to gather their own colors. Blue Bird flew in the sky and absorbed the sky for its color. Yellow Bird flew into a corn field and absorbed the color of the corn pollen. One bird went on a quest to gather all the colors of the rainbow. What ever became of that bird?
I grew up listening to this story and many others during my youth on the Navajo reservation. While listening to these stories, I often imagined a vibrant colorful world where animals had human qualities and could speak with humans.
To capture that essence, I will use costumed dancers to play the animals in Rainbow Bird. To bring this world to vivid life, I am going to animate each and every single frame.
I can't wait until you see the finished productions of both The Lady and the Eagle (the film that I have been animating in preparation) and Rainbow Bird. This will truly be a new step forward for interpolate rotoscope and native story telling.
T'aashoodii shik'aa'iinleed nibeeso lah shaani'aah! (Please, help me out by donating your money).
My producers and I have some awesome rewards for your contribution. One of which that I am excited for, if you donate $25 I will animate a picture of you that you will email to me. Also, I will sign my John Hancock on your picture making this a personalized collectible.
The sooner you donate, the sooner I can start making this film and the sooner you can see this Navajo story come to life!

A long time ago, all feathered beings of the sky wore one color,
The Navajo deities permitted the birds to choose
Their own tint to distinguish themselves from another.
A bird flew above the clouds for the color blue
Another bird flew into a corn field and rolled in pollen so yellow,
Red bird dove into the sea and found the crimson corral’s hue.
One bird would travel far to outshine her bird fellow.
Eastern horizon to western horizon she would travel,
What became of that bird who seek to capture the rainbow?
With cinema, the bird’s story I intend to unravel.
My childhood was spent on the Navajo Nation,
Those older than I took the time to tell me,
Traditional stories passed down through each generation
Of the Warrior Twins, Changing Woman, amongst many.
All the animal characters would talk with humans,
The animals would impart valuable teachings,
Lessons they have learns through their own actions
So that we humans would avoid their mistakes.
To honor that connection between human and animal,
I hope to use professional dancers and colorful costumes,
Both of which will require substantial capital,
So please join us to ensure my project blooms.
In addition to the costumed dancer portraying rainbow bird,
I will animate each and every frame with interpolate rotoscope,
A process that I have been practicing rest assured,
With my short film “the Lady and the Eagle;” it looks dope.
My producers and I are excited to announce tokens
To exhibit our appreciation of your monetary participation,
For $25 not only will you be one of many credited patrons,
A picture of you will be animated by the director; he’s called Brian.
Thusly, please do consider donating your funds,
The sooner you join us, the sooner this project will fly,
And lead the way for film to tell Navajo legends,
thank you for visiting my kickstarter page and goodbye!
