WHAT WE WANT TO DO
We are raising funds to create a traveling exhibit of Ernest Withers’ photographs with the target being colleges and universities across the country. There are over one million images in this extensive archive and we want to select 120-150 photographs of newly discovered images from this achieve. That tell a story of America in the midst of a great social change from 1940-1970s as African-Americans were finally allowed to play Major League Baseball; as they fought for and won their civil rights; as their blues music had a baby and it became rock ‘n roll.
WHY WE WANT TO DO IT
Ernest Withers photographed a world in the midst of great social change. The more we collectively understand that history of change, the better off we are for understanding our individual role and responsibility in a changed world. It is particularly important for a younger African-American generation to see detailed history of a very different world their parents and grandparents faced. Withers’ photographs of Civil Rights events in the deep South from the 1950s-1970s are riveting in terms of showing the alternating emotions of fear and hope; confrontation, violence and achievement. The Negro Baseball League photos show a segregated society enjoying the national pastime while the players hit and pitch their way into the Major Leagues. The early Memphis Music photographs show segregated nightclubs and integrated music shows. Elvis, BB, Howlin’ Wolf and Aretha Franklin as youngsters with hope in their eyes. These photographs show a unique viewpoint from INSIDE the African-American world-- documenting a broad range of social, political, sports and music events along with the proud people who lived them. Borrowing from the philosophy of historian H.G. Wells, the history shown in these photographs will take educators and students farther in their vision. Such encouragement, and truth about our history shown in Withers photographs is where our Presidents, Scientists, Doctors, Inventors, Artists, Families and Teachers, all derive strength for the future.
HOW DO WE PLAN TO DO IT
We will complete our 120+ image selection from the achieve files. Digitize each image and build traveling displays for each of our selected categories (Civil Rights, Music and Sports). Build lighting, framing display structure for exhibit. The targeted amount of the $15,000 raise will complete one traveling exhibit. Once funding has its successful completion by April 2011 we will then start scheduling and booking with colleges, universities and High Schools across the country to begin our tours in August 2011 which is the beginning of the FY12 school term. From May though July (90 days) we will complete the building of our travel exhibit display unit(s).
WHAT'S THE MONEY FOR
Our $15,000 target raise will allow us to complete one (1) traveling exhibit unit. We would love to raise over our target amount because this will allow us to have multiple traveling units for the road. Our aim is to have at least four (4) units, one for each region East, Central and West plus a full back-up unit. The more we raise the more schools we will be able to serve simultaneously across the country. If you want to help with our culturally important traveling photography project, we are more than willing to give back to you. Of course we would love to have hundreds of one dollar donations, but starting at five dollars, we start giving something back. From stunning images on post cards up to large format archival photo prints from the Ernest Withers Collection.
