About this project
Return with me, if you will, to the early 1980's. George Michael was playing on the radio, the A-Team was making plans come together, and the personal computer was just entering American homes. Some of the earliest examples of PC gaming were a highly appreciated genre known as text adventures. Yes, people everywhere were doing their best to ATTACK troll with SWORD or to avoid deadly grues.
The Narratavius Story Engine seeks to bring the classic feel of adventure literature to a modern audience, specifically through the use of Apple's line of mobile products. But, more than just being a story, Narratavius is a method for opening up the possibility for an endless number of classic text adventures of any imaginable genre. When a user downloads Narratavius from the app store, they will be immediately greeted with an ever-expanding array of stories from which to choose.
This project's main goal will be to raise funds to hire a lead designer who will help us to create the best user experience, taking advantage of many of the modern features found in iOS. In addition, if the funding goal is exceeded, the money may be used to explore options for porting to other platforms such as the web, PC, or Android.
One of the most exciting prospects of this project is the ability for many talented, independent authors to have their work seen by a multitude of users.
Check this space as time moves on to get all the latest updates on Narratavius. And of course, you can always reach us at narratavius.com.
FAQ
-
Frotz is really great at emulating the old style mechanics of text adventures. However, Narratavius is built from the ground up for touch devices. Instead of typing in all your commands on the keyboard (subject to the will of AutoCorrect), they are selected by tapping different on-screen items.
A video is forthcoming which will demonstrate how Narratavius works.
-
The Narratavius Story Engine interprets an author's story so that it displays it on the iPhone. There is no programming involved; an author basically just writes their story and the content is generated such that Narratavius can read it.
-
Not at all! One of the main reasons that Narratavius exists is to give independent authors a chance to get their work seen by others. If you are interested in learning more about the process of writing for Narratavius, please send me a message via Kickstarter!
