Examine the world of coal in the Southeastern United States through photographs.
Coal is a combustible sedimentary rock usually occurring in coal beds or seams. Coal is composed primarily of carbon along with variable quantities of other elements, chiefly hydrogen, sulfur, oxygen, and nitrogen. It is primarily burned as a fossil fuel for the production of electricity and/or heat, and is also used for industrial purposes such as refining metals.
Coal is the largest source of energy for the generation of electricity worldwide. Coal is extracted from the ground by mining, either underground by shaft mining through the seams or in open pits. The United States is the second largest producer of coal in the world at about a third of the Chinese production. 45% of the Coal from U.S. Sources is from east of the Mississippi River.
As of 2010, there were 1466 generating plants in the US; with over half of them being placed into service prior to 1970. Those plants older than 40 years represented over one-third of the production capacity of coal.
December of 2011 saw a decrease in the percentage of total domestic electricity produced by coal to down to 39%; a level not seen since March of 1978. The EIA projects this trend to continue into the future. The 2012 futures price for Central Appalachian coal declined 11.7% toward the end of February, falling to $61.50 per short ton at the close of trading on February 24 at the New York Mercantile Exchange.
The trends seem to point to a reduction of coal use in America. Many may ask what positives this will bring for the environment, or the negative effects on the economies which depend on this industry, but we will not be exploring either area—our goal is to simply provide images for posterity.
With your support, Coal: A Picture Book (Volume 1) will document the world of coal as it applies to the South-Eastern States; specifically Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas (defined as Region IV by the Office of Management and Budget).

And remember, with Kickstarter, if the full funding required to complete the project is not received, your contribution will not be processed.
Your support will assist us with the cost of photographic equipment, the costs of travelling over 5500 miles and across 8 states (gas, maintenance, hotels, road tolls), as well as the cost of editing, design, publishing, and marketing the completed works. Funds will also be used to provide rewards to our backers.
