About this project

A Note From the Executive Director of the Drum Boogie Festival, Garry Kvistad.

Two years ago I put together a very special free musical event, Drum Boogie Festival - a production of the Woodstock Chimes Fund, in Kingston, NY which drew several thousand people. World class musicians performed diverse styles of percussion music and dance. I am presenting this one day event again this fall on September 17th (rain date 18th) from 9:30 AM to 8 PM in beautiful Cornell Park in the historic Rondout district of Kingston overlooking the Hudson River. The lineup of performers reads like a who’s who of stars within their styles of Jazz, Rock, Classical, Rudimental, Steel Pan and African. This year’s festival will offer an exciting morning drum circle.

The Drum Boogie Festival Advisory Board is made up of the following people:
• Jack DeJohnette, jazz musician / composer
• Jerry Marotta, concert /studio drummer
• John Storyk, recording studio designer
• Kevin Brady, President, Precision Flow Technologies
• Michael Lang, Woodstock Festival producer
• Milton Glaser, graphic arts designer
• Pat Metheny, jazz musician /composer
• Ruth Underwood, former percussionist with Frank Zappa
• Steve Reich, composer

Attendees at the two-stage event will experience international drumming styles through outstanding performances from some of the world’s top musicians, mostly living within a 100 mile radius of Kingston, including:
• Jack DeJohnette - one of the most influential jazz musicians of our time
• Jerry Marotta - former drummer for Orleans, Peter Gabriel, Hall and Oates and the Indigo Girls
• Jonathan Singer – Rag-Time Xylophone Group and Indian Drumming
• 25 piece NYU Steel Band with Liam Teague, highly acclaimed Steel Drum (Pan) player from Trinidad
• POOK, Intercity Youth Dancers and Drummers
• NEXUS – world renown percussion group, “the high priests of the percussion world” ...The New York Times
• Hip Pickles – Spectacular Rudimental Drumming
• African Style Percussion and Dance - To Be Announced
• Catskill Mountain Native American Flute and Drum group
• Orlando Hernandez, emerging young tap dancer
• Drum Circle led by Chet Doboe to benefit Cancer Research through drumstrong.org

The name Drum Boogie was suggested by world famous marketing genius, Milton Glaser - who designed our logo – and was inspired by the 1941 film, Ball of Fire, in which Gene Krupa’s band played his tune Drum Boogie. We really hope you will be able to attend this unique and exciting event. Pass the word on to others please! If you’d like to help us make it possible, become a Boogie Supporter.
