An interactive public art project on the convergence of coal mining and alternative energy in the community of Paonia, CO.
As an artist interested in energy sources and sustainability, I am excited to attend a residency in Paonia, CO, a town known for its coal mining, organic farming, and its use of renewable energy technologies. I want to collect stories from the community about these varied perspectives on energy. These stories will be part of a series of art projects, including the primary interactive work called "Potential Energy: Carbon Conserves".
For this project, I am going to build a faux vendor’s stand that will be covered with woodcut prints of coal and fruit, the two main economic sources for Paonia. I will jar locally mined coal as though it were a fruit preserve. These jars will have labels that say “Potential Energy: Carbon Conserves”, and the back labels will include stories and ideas from community members on coal mining, alternative energy, and global warming responses. I will bring the stand to Paonia’s Mountain Harvest Festival, where I will trade the Carbon Conserves for stories or fruit.
The project acts as a witness to old and new energy sources that coexist in one small town, and has the potential to spark community dialog about energy, economy, and sustainability as large ideas that extend beyond Paonia. I will upload images, video, and quotes to a blog as part of this outreach and continued dialog.
Why I need your help:
The artist residency in Paonia supplies me with a living space and studio space, but I need to raise money for my travel costs and for material costs for the primary interactive project in the community: “Potential Energy: Carbon Conserves”. For this project, I need to buy one hundred mason jars and a quarter ton of the locally mined coal, wood, wheels, paint, pens, ink, paper, labels and other materials to make the project look great.

Examples of rewards include the project image on the video above, a woodblock print of the "Potential Energy: Carbon Conserves" pattern. See examples of drawings on my website under graphite drawings and drawings of heads. Examples for the digital print of an intervention can be seen under Urban Sculpture.
