A photography project capturing the spirit and resilience of our elders. The story of our life is written in the lines on our face.
Resilience is a photography project created by Gregory Tapler.
My belief is too many men and women in the community overlook or dismiss the elderly. This photography project is a way for me to communicate my want for them to be honored and appreciated. The eyes of the elderly, along with the lines on their faces, tell the story of hardship, happiness, love, heartache, pain, joy, celebration, hope and faith. Through the years, they have experienced many things so many of us are going through today and we have so much to learn if we simply start the conversation.
My hope is that this project brings adults closer to their parents, children closer to their grandparents, members of society closer to the grandfathers and grandmothers in their community.
Resilience begins at a senior living facility in Bethlehem, PA. I have created a set of questions that I ask each subject. Their responses to the questions allow me to see a bit into their world. I follow them on their journey back in time and together we create images that capture their resilience and reflects the light within each and every one of them. Viewing the photographs (which are a welcoming 16"x24" portrait), you are offered an opportunity to stand, be still, and read the stories they have to tell.
The money being raised will be used for the printing and mounting of each of the 30 portraits. The opening of Resilience will be held where the project began, at the residence of the elders.
Thank you for joining me on this journey. Please continue to follow the progression of the project and remember, next time you see an elder in your community, say hello – and start the conversation.
