We're opening a year-round community market and cafe in the heart of DC, offering our handmade fresh fruit pops and local produce.
Our goal: To kickstart the summer and open our first shop, the Pleasant Pops Farmhouse Market & Cafe.
The Background: Two years ago, we got the idea to make fresh fruit ice pops with local produce from DC farmers’ markets. We started selling on the weekends at the Mt. Pleasant Farmers’ Market (that’s how we got our name). We grew our business and customer base by expanding into more markets and catering events, and by opening our truck, Big Poppa. This summer, we are opening a retail store so we can sell our pops and local goodies year round. Don’t worry -- we’ll keep up with the truck and farmers’ markets too.
What is the Farmhouse Market & Cafe?
Inspired by DC area farmers’ markets, our vision is to create a year-round community market and gathering place in the heart of Northwest DC. We’ll feature a selection of seasonal local produce, dairy, farm goods, sandwiches, locally roasted coffees, and our original pop creations.Here’s what’s even more exciting: we’ll be open year round at Florida Avenue and 18th St. - conveniently located between Adams Morgan, Dupont, and U St.
How do we plan to do it? Community support and re-investment
Pleasant Pops is a bootstrapped, community-backed effort. Since our founding, we have received an outpouring of support from friends, family, and customers, helping out to make our dream a success. We are re-investing our profits over the past two market seasons to make this happen, purchasing equipment such as pop machines, blenders, freezers, and storage.
What will we do with funds raised? Here are a few examples:
** Build our own commercial kitchen so we can increase production from two to seven days per week.
** Design outdoor signage
** Create handcrafted tables made from reclaimed wood
** Work with local artists to design menus and tables
** Market products that support local farmers and producers

We’re planning an opening night party for early summer where everyone who pledges $25 or above will be able to preview the new store and come by to try the new menu.

Our build out and construction of the Pleasant Pops farmhouse market will cost far more than $20,000. We're also using bank loans, putting our life savings into the project and using all of the money that Pleasant Pops has made the past two years. We appreciate all contributions after we reach our goal. We'll use the extra money to help do construction, buy equipment and cover unexpected costs (so far we've had such unexpected costs as paying customs brokers, lawyers to review our loans, and increases in construction costs due to high gas prices).
