Broadside Attractions: Vanquished Terrains is a playful collaborative project between 12 San Francisco Bay Area visual artists and 12 Bay Area writers curated by Maw Shein Win and Megan Wilson in collaboration with Kevin Chen and Intersection for the Arts.

Historically, the broadside has been defined as a large sheet of paper printed on one side and used as a poster to announce an event, proclamation or other matter. Although broadsides were first introduced in England, they became a prime means of communication in the early days of the United States. In addition to announcements, advertisements, and commentaries, broadsides also came to feature cartoons, poems and song lyrics. During the twentieth century Harlem Renaissance, Concrete, and Beat writers claimed the broadside as a below-the-radar way to get their words out onto the streets. However, as printed matter has become more and more obsolete in our digital world, the broadside too has become outdated or less accessible (today poetry broadsides can be purchased as limited edition artworks through venues such as City Lights Booksellers & Publishers).

Broadside Attractions: Vanquished Terrains embraces the tradition while pushing the interpretation of the form further. Curators Maw Shein Win and Megan Wilson have invited twelve visual artists and twelve writers to work together in collaborative pairs to create new visual and literary works that reflect on current events and contemporary culture using the theme “Vanquished Terrains” as a point of departure.

PROCESS

PHASE ONE:
Visual Artists: Provide their Writer Collaborator with a “playlist” inspired by the theme Vanquished Terrains. The playlist includes: 
* One Piece of Music
* One Movie
* One Location.

PHASE TWO:
Writers: Create a piece of writing of up to 500 words based on the playlist provided to them by their Artist Collaborator.

PHASE THREE:
Visual Artists: Create a 2 dimensional visual image inspired by the written piece created by their Writer Collaborator.

PHASE FOUR:
The written and visual works created in Phases Two & Three will be paired together and printed as a traditional broadside. The size of the broadside will be 15 by 22 inches.

PHASE FIVE:
Visual Artists and Writer Collaborative Teams: Work together to create a piece that integrates the initial text from Phase Two into a non-traditional form of a “broadside” (i.e. sculpture, video, sound sculpture, digital work).
