The Luna Nova Ensemble celebrates Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time with a new online recording and study guide.
Luna Nova presents a Celebration of Olivier Messiaen
What is the Luna Nova Ensemble?
Since its founding nine years ago Luna Nova has performed nearly 150 concerts in colleges, museums, churches, and concert halls across the country. Its repertoire has been 20th century masterworks as well as works by living composers. Luna Nova was initially supported by the Associated Colleges of the South Music Technology project. In that connection we created a large numbers of online music instruction resources to be used in college classrooms but also to be enjoyed by anyone who wanted a more in depth understanding of the music they are hearing. (See www.lunanova.org) Our first project, created in 2003, was devoted to Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire. To supplement our live recording we added history, analysis, and other supporting information and put it online at www.lunanova.org/pierrot/. After nine years this site is still typically visited by about 700 viewers a month. It is also linked to by music institutions and education sites around the world.
In 2006 Luna Nova became an independent non-profit organization. We launched the annual Belvedere Chamber Music Festival and continued to give concerts in Memphis and beyond. We also continued to work with student and faculty composers, performing their works and giving lectures and presentations to classes. We premiered and recorded approximately thirty new works written specifically for our ensemble.
Our Kickstarter Project Idea
With all of our performing we still realized that our existing online projects were reaching thousands of people year after year we want to continue to create additional projects focused on widely known and studied works. The idea of a project devoted to a major work by Olivier Messiaen is an ideal choice. The year 2012 is the 20th anniversary of the death of Messiaen, French composer, organist and one of the most important figures in 20th century music. Luna Nova has performed several of his works in the past and will present his Quartet for the End of Time as the culminating work of the Belvedere Chamber Music Festival in Memphis, Tennessee on June 23, 2012.
Our Kickstarter project will begin with this live concert recording and supplement it with video interviews with the performers, score analysis, historical background, bibliography, and interactive quizzes. It will be put online at the Luna Nova Teaching Resources site (www.lunanova.org/teaching.html), which already has a large well-established following. We will advertise it through our e-newsletter, website, Facebook, and Twitter accounts. We feel that the Kickstarter project will not only make the live performance possible but will transform it into an ongoing, interactive experience for viewers around the world.
We need your support to bring this project to life. Remember that we must raise the entire $2000 to be awarded the funds. Happily, overfunding is allowed, and encouraged. If overfunded we will be able to create even more resources for listeners who love new music!
