We've launched an exciting new project of our own! Introducing the Kickstarter app for iPhone!

Funded! This project successfully raised its funding goal on December 31.

Photo-main

A collaboration between writer Andrew Lapham Fersch and artist Penn Sultan. A story about right, wrong, and the field in-between.

Update on 12/11/12 - IT'S OFFICIAL, PENN AND I ARE GOING TO DO A SECOND PROJECT TOGETHER AND ARE ALREADY PLANNING OUR SECOND BOOK! THIS MEANS THAT IF YOU PLEDGE $15 (or more), AND WE RAISE AT LEAST $1700, YOU'LL GET A COPY OF BOTH! ALSO, CHECK OUT OUR NEW REWARDS.

Update on 12/7/12 - ALTHOUGH THE PROJECT HAS BEEN FULLY FUNDED, PLEASE STILL CONSIDER PLEDGING TO GET YOUR OWN COPY AND BECAUSE, IF $1700 (or more) IS RAISED, I WILL BE ABLE TO FUND ANOTHER BOOK AND YOU, AS ONE OF THE FIRST SEVENTY-FIVE SUPPORTERS (with a donation larger than six dollars), WILL BE GUARANTEED A FREE COPY OF THAT ONE AS WELL! THANKS AGAIN!

Out beyond ideas of wrong-doing
and right-doing there is a field.
I’ll meet you there.

-Rumi

Rolf Gates, one of the great teachers of my life, shared this Rumi quote with me during his yoga teacher training and a story was born in my mind. When I found Penn Sultan, it was clear that his beautiful woodcuts were a perfect fit for what I had in mind.

The book tells the story of a brother and sister who learn the real meanings of right and wrong, together.

It is an adorable little book (4"x 4" - 60 pages), perfect for little hands or anyone who knows that big things can come in any shape or size.

The book costs around $3.50 to print, shipping is approximately $1.50 per book in the US. The additional funds are being spent to help pay Penn for his time and supplies.

Thank you so much for your support, it means the world to me personally, and also means I can continue creating stories to share with the world while supporting amazing artists like Penn.

Feel free to check out my other writing HERE and HERE.

(All art copyright Penn Sultan, and the music is from his band, Last Good Tooth)

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

The words have already been written, the wood has already been cut. A proof of the book has already been made. We are fully ready to print the book - we just need funding to do so!

FAQ

  • Well, there's no scientific evidence, but the clear answer is yes. Why? Well, you're supporting writing - that's always awesome. In addition, you're supporting thinking, which I happen to think is a good thing. You are also encouraging independent creation which means unique projects that otherwise might never happen. That all sounds pretty awesome-enhancing to me.

  • RUM CAKE

1 BOX DUNCAN HINES YELLOW CAKE MIX
    3/4 C. CANOLA/VEGETABLE OIL
    3/4 C. APRICOT NECTAR
    4 LARGE EGGS

    1/2 C. SUGAR
    1/2 C. GOOD RUM
    1 STICK OF BUTTER

SOME KIND OF SKEWER TO POKE HOLES IN CAKE.

    DISREGARD CAKE MIX DIRECTIONS.

IN MIXING BOWL PUT CAKE MIX, OIL, APRICOT NECTAR, AND EGGS.  MIX UNTIL MOISTENED ON LOW, SCRAPE DOWN AND BEAT TWO MINUTES ON MEDIUM SPEED.

POUR INTO PREPARED PAN (1 LARGE BUNDT PAN OR TWO 8" BUNDT PANS).  BAKE AT 350 FOR 25-35 MINUTES (UNTIL TOP FEELS FIRM).

ONCE THE CAKE COMES OUT OF THE OVEN, MELT THE SUGAR, RUM, AND BUTTER IN A SAUCE PAN UNTIL THE SUGAR DISSOLVES.  MEANWHILE POKE AS MANY HOLES AS YOU CAN INTO THE CAKES WITH A SKEWER - YOU WANT THE RUM TO HAVE A PLACE TO GO WHEN YOU POUR IT ON.

THE CAKE SHOULD COOL ONLY ABOUT 20 MINUTES BEFORE YOU ADD THE RUM MIXTURE.  THIS SHOULD BE SPOONED ON UNTIL ALL THE MIXTURE IS USED.  LET SIT OVERNIGHT.

YOU MAY HAVE TO WHACK IT TO GET IT OUT OF THE PAN.  IF IT SEEMS TO BE STICKING RETURN TO A HEATED OVEN FOR A MINUTE OR TWO FOR THE SUGAR TO MELT AND UNMOLD.

    LET COOL THEN EAT.

  • The $40 level may be shipped for $10 internationally. Additionally, the other book options may be sent internationally, but shipping will be calculated individually. The $2 option (of the book in PDF form) is available anywhere in the world and at no extra cost, so that's something!

  • Penn and I are going to work on another book together. As a thank you for your support, we're going to offer everyone who pledges $15 (or more) a free copy of that second book (because you'll have made it happen). So, really, if you pledge $15 (or more), you're getting two books - not one - only one doesn't exist...yet.
