Cake Shop:
For 5 years now Andy, Greg and Nick have been owner/operators of Cake Shop on Ludlow Street in New York City. The three of us are music fans that created our ideal place to hang out. Part cafe, part bar, part venue (we even sell records), the indie spirit of Cake Shop has created a brick and mortar community for creative emerging rock bands both locally and internationally. Through word of mouth and pure drive we have built a place for musicians, artists, and music lovers to socialize, feed off each other, collaborate and have fun. We have been so busy managing, paying bills and generally surviving, that we haven't had a chance to build up our on-line community. Here's where you come in...
The Plan:
Cake Shop is hoping to give exposure to talented new bands by developing original content and programing for our web-site: Cake-Shop.com. Through Kickstarter, we want to raise as much money as possible in the true indie/D.I.Y tradition. Phase one of the project is to produce a web-series which mixes exclusive live performances with fun interviews of up and coming bands. Cake Shop will hand pick some of our favorite new bands then invite our patrons, customers and friends over for a special taped live show. After each performance, the bands will be invited to the upstairs bar area to be interviewed. The interview segments will be loose, casual and open in the hopes of being entertaining, funny and human. The web-series will also showcase underground comedians from our Tuesday evening stand-up showcase.
Phase Two:
The next phase would be to build Cake-Shop.com into a full fledged on-line community and resource center for bands and music lovers to interact, learn and create. In addition to original content, we envision an on-line radio station, record label, band info sharing, touring resource center, blog arena (i think i just made up a new term), international booking assistance etc.
Patrons and Rewards:
Each Kickstarter patron will have a vote to determine which bands will be featured in the episodes. We also have great perks digitally, in the mail and at the Cake Shop location. You will gain access to private taping of live shows and parties associated with the series. We would love to see bands, independent record labels, galleries, booking agencies and blogs as patrons since we have always relied on "friends of Cake Shop" for our greatest bills, secret shows and amazing press. Our policy of "crafting bills" every night through in-house booking, and giving all cover charges to the bands, has given us a reputation as solid venue owners with an eye for up-and-coming talent who nurture a scene and take chances with experimental music. The money raised on Kickstarter.com will go directly to shooting, recording, editing and producing the segments...and feeding the bands. All extra money will go towards more episodes and implementing phase two. Cake Shop would be honored if everyone kept giving after we reach our goal so we can do this right and get a jump on phase two. Please pass this Kickstarter link on to all your friends and associates. If this works out, we will be creating permanent jobs since we will need to hire staff to maintain the site...after all, Andy, Greg and Nick can't do it themselves forever...we need your help.

After creating alt.coffee cafe in 1995 and The Library bar on Avenue A in NYC, I teamed up with my brother Andy Bodor and Greg Curley to develop our defining venue Cake Shop on Ludlow street. Now we've got a sister bar in Williamsburg Brooklyn called Bruar Falls. And Greg has The Double Windsor in Brooklyn.
