In 2007 I photographed 5 girls. At the time, they were 11. Now they're 16, and I want to photograph them again.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
In 2007 I photographed five girls: Maggie, Cora, Jayne-Li, Caroyln, and Maddie. At the time, they were 11. Now they’re 16, they’ve matured a lot, and I want to photograph them again.
Before beginning this project I stumbled on a quote by the Marquise du Deffand (an 18th century free thinking, educated, and defiant woman). She said that “women are never stronger than when they arm themselves with their weakness.” This quote became a guide and since then my images have aimed to convey that vulnerability and strength are not mutually exclusive. When I first photographed the girls I was interested in the passage from childhood to adulthood. Now they have traded middle school for highschool and are well on their way to becoming young women. Childhood is a fading thing in their rear view mirrors. But the teenage years are just as confusing and disorienting as closing the chapter on childhood. So I want to photograph the girls again to explore this idea as well as to document this transitional period and the various changes they’ve undergone.
WHY SHOULD YOU SUPPORT THIS PROJECT
- Because the photographs are going to be great!
- Because this project is about something everyone can connect with: courage and strength in transitional moments... and all the drama of being a teenager.
- Because this is a rare opportunity to photograph young women at multiple stages in their lives.
MEET THE TEAM: ME!
I was born in 1985 in Philadelphia. I started photographing when I was six and never stopped. I worked as a freelance photographer in New York for many years, had several exhibitions there, and I now live in San Francisco.
About my photographs: Places in and moments of transition are a motivating theme in my work. My ongoing series of portraits of my sisters and brother and of other children their age aims to capture the emotional and physical tensions in the passage from childhood to adulthood. My ongoing work from Iceland focuses on themes that resonate in all of us: the universal fear of isolation or change. I strive to create something unidentifiable but familiar to suggest that there is more substance to connect with beneath the surface of the photograph.
WHY I NEED YOUR HELP
To make this series of portraits, I need to raise money to travel to Philadelphia to photograph Maggie, Cora, Jayne-Li, Maddie, and Carolyn. I have worked out that $1300 is the absolute minimum amount to make this project possible. This all goes towards making the series of portraits, not to me directly. The Kickstarter goal covers the production of the shoot and post-production.
-Your contributions will go towards :
- production: equipment rentals, studio space, travel to Philadelphia
- post-production: film processing and printing
For making this project possible I want to thank EVERYONE with prints from the series!
Thank you so much for your help! If you are unable to support the project financially, I understand, but I do hope you will be able to help me spread the word! Here's where I’m at:
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The main challenges of making this project are unfortunately just financial. Photographing with film, instead of digitally, is simply more expensive. But so much more beautiful. And then the logistical challenge of living on the other side of the country from where my subjects live.
