A free online game where players draw the world and explore it together. Meant to inspire creativity, entertain curiosity, and foster playfulness.
What is Infinite Blank?
An endless canvas upon which anyone can paint. A giant world anyone can explore. A monument to creativity, discovery and playfulness. A free indie game, and a labor of love. Go give it a try! It's available for Windows, Mac and Linux.
[Note: since the above video was made, a new version has been launched.]
Infinite Blank is an ever-expanding online world which is drawn by its players. It works like this: upon starting the game, a player can draw their own character or choose a provided one. Afterwards, they enter the world and can explore by running and jumping, with the use of a climbing hook, or by other means as they are added to the game. If they find the edge or a patch of blank space, they can draw something new. They can 'speak' with other players by making drawings, explore with them, or guide them to see things they've created.
As players play, the world grows. It expands in every direction to form a whimsical mosaic reflecting the character of all its inhabitants. To account for this growth, rapid transport will be made available between 'hubs' added periodically to the map. Players retain a map of every place they've explored, and will be able to "mark" a few favorite locations they can jump to at their leisure.
A forum is being set up as a possible starting point for a player community: Go here to talk about the game.
I wrote a status update trying to answer this for myself, and it turned into a little essay. If you're patient enough for two minutes' reading, have a look. It explains why I made this, and why I'm keeping it free.
Where do pledges go?
The reason I've brought it here is that I can't sustainably develop and run an online game from which I make no income. Right now I'm more or less broke, or I might be funding more of this out-of-pocket. I need a new server machine (rather than the six-year-old Dell under my desk) if I'm to accommodate a large number of players, and down the road I might need to pay for a good connection for it. (For now I'm blessed with college internet.) I've decided that I'm going to submit to the Independent Games Festival, so it'll also cover the entry fee for that. Server box and entry fee aside, the plan is to squirrel away the majority of the proceeds as a "keep it running" fund, since I really don't know what to expect in terms of future maintenance. My $1000 goal is meant to be a humble one, but if I happen to get over-funded, I'll be able to dedicate even more time and resources to development.
I love this project and want to watch it grow. Your help will ensure it can stay alive and freely available.
Help me paint the Infinite Blank.
* In-game rewards will be available as soon as the necessary programming is done. That might be the case by the time fundraising ends, but might take longer too. (I always underestimate how long it takes to do things!) Also, more on private worlds here!
Have a question? If the info above doesn't help, you can ask the project creator directly.
