The
Jinn—a race that,
according to the Holy Quran, is created from
“smokeless fire” and exists
in a parallel, supernatural dimension alongside us —has become the
increasingly-popular subject of graphic novels and comic books. Yet the West’s
growing interest in Islamic teachings has done little more than scratch the
surface of the deeply-spiritual and darkly-palpable world of the Jinn.
Inspired by
reality, governed by science and guided by faith, the Jinn Warriors series
explores the true origins of the Jinn beings and paints their fictional
progress through human history. Although fantastical, this Lord of the Rings-meets-The
Devil’s Advocate graphic novel mini-series is grounded in reality. Told by
way of masterful imagery, the Jinn Warriors’ gripping narrative
spans from the Big Bang to the End of Days and examines the true nature of the
beast, literally!
For the Jinn
Warriors’ antagonist is the universal and most-enduring villain of all
time. Mainstream pop-culture knows him as Satan, Jewish tradition refers to
him as Lucifer, and Muslims call him Iblis Al-Shaitan. Unlike
in Christianity and Judaism, in Islam the Devil is not a fallen angel, but
rather he is a Jinni! Much like Adam is considered the father of all humanity,
Iblis is regarded as the first Jinn and, subsequently, the father of all Jinn.
Therein lays the persistent animosity between the two races.
Though
largely referencing Islamic traditions, at its core Jinn Warriors carries the
unflinching message of religious acceptance, solidarity and integration. Verses
from the Quran, the Bible and the Torah are artfully weaved
through the plotline, conveying a clear unity of thought and belief among the
“People of the Book”. Equally important, singling out the Devil as humanity’s
true enemy and exposing his quintessential strategy of ‘divide and conquer’.
This is also
reflected in the three main protagonists, each of whom perishes, while
protecting a presumed adversary to their faith. Ameena, a Pharaonic
Queen, helps Moses during the Exodus; Haredi, a Rabbi, saves Jesus
from the cross; and Metellus, a Roman Commander, defends the Prophet Mohamed.
After their deaths, the three heroes are resurrected in the spiritual Jinn
dimension, Jannahim, where they find out that not all Jinn are evil. There,
Ameena, Haredi, and Metellus team up with a band of good Jinn warriors to face
off against Satan and his minions on their own turf.
The Devil’s War is the first of the 11-issue Jinn
Warriors series, although chronologically it would be Chapter Five, following
the stories of Jinnesis and the three heroes’ origins. The Devil’s War
takes place during WWII, as the demons—Shaitans—fuel the flames of conflict, in an
effort to recruit the Third Horseman of the Apocalypse and
proliferate Iblis’ Army of Darkness.
Recurring
references to the three monotheistic religions’ testaments add a certain level
of credibility to what would otherwise be a mind-boggling fantasy. Still, some reviewers
doubt the novel’s sincerity and intentions, seeing it instead as an Islamic
encroachment on Western culture—a form of ‘Pop Jihad’. This might not be that
far from the truth: in Arabic the word “Jihad”, much like the Jinn
Warriors series, reflects one’s internal strive towards God-righteousness
and virtue.
