An art exhibition catalog provides an overview of our fragile home, inspired by words astronauts use to describe the earth from space.
Our Fragile Home
"Sustain ~ Protect ~ Balance ~ Harmony ~
Nurture ~ Fragile ~ Steward ~ Beauty"
These are the words that Astronauts and Cosmonauts use when they look down at the earth for the first time. At a meeting at the United Nations a group of space travelers used the same words in six different languages to describe their thoughts about the fragile beauty of our planet.
Their words challenge us to become guardians and caretakers of our earthly home.
The words also inspired artist Pat Musick and Astronaut husband, Jerry Carr, to create the art exhibit, Our Fragile Home, which will tour museums in New England in 2013-2014. The exhibit consists of sculpture and works on paper that portray the space traveler's feelings. It is full of art that addresses the delicate nature of our earth and the incredible forces exerted upon it. Like the childhood game we played, rock and paper affect each other and must be brought into the kind of balance and harmony that an artist and engineer can design.
The exhibit needs a catalog that will interpret their message to viewers. In addition the booklet would be used to reach a larger audience and stimulate the possibility of more exhibits outside of the regional area.
A beautiful 36 page catalog is being designed by LMW Design, a Vermont company, which features inspired images by nature photographer David Middleton, and essays by a leading curator and a director of a famous art center. As well, the artist and the astronaut add their thoughts and unique perspectives on why "they all said the same thing" and what that means for art.
Our Kickstarter team can make the catalog possible!
Please spread the word about this project to your friends and family. We would love to have them join us in this effort!

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
In this day of pinched budgets and financial struggles many museums find producing a catalog is often not possible or the effort must, at least, be greatly watered down. Because the message of Our Fragile Home is so important nothing has been spared. The catalog LMW Design is creating is a beautiful work of art itself. Visually exciting page design and exquisite photography, four great essays... the fine touches are all there. The final product will be something the Kickstarter Team will be proud they helped to publish.
Perhaps the greatest challenge in creating an exhibition catalog is to make sure the final product relates to the exhibit...that is, does it tell the story to the reader in a way that adds to the viewing and understanding of the art? Does the individual who can not see the show in person have a comprehensive understanding of the work and it's message? This is what makes it an educational tool and is the justification for the product. In addition to its use described above, it will be an important aid in reaching museums nationwide and a broader viewing public.
The artist and the Astronaut bring their broad experience to the project. They have produced two other catalogs for traveling exhibits of Pat's work and a book for one. In addition, they have written four books and lectured widely on their art. The catalog "Epilogue" of the artist's 1992-93 tour of the Midwest won a Gold Medal from the Southeastern Museum Association. With these credentials and the support of their Kickstarter team, who knows where this effort will go!!
