INFLATABLE G.A. is a human-powered temporary structure to cover the Occupy Wall Street General Assembly or any other public gathering.
We are working on an inflatable tent for public gathering – for General Assembly meetings here in New York and elsewhere – as well as collective use of public space in general. We believe that the energy that spurred the occupation of Zuccotti Park has not dissipated. This is a project to help to re-incite that energy and enliven public space – and test its boundaries.
We're asking for 1,000 dollars because we know we can barely make it happen for that amount. We hope to receive more -- for better inflatables and possibly more of them!
You can find images of our project, called 123 Occupy at www.123occupy.com. Now spring is here, and we are ready to build a giant, inflatable pavilion to house the General Assembly. This structure, called the Inflatable General Assembly is the final piece of a three-part project. The first structure we built was an insulated platform for protestors living in the tent communities. These platforms provide warmth and a dry surface for pitching a tent; protecting protestors from the cold, wet ground. Our second, larger project was a collapsible shelter designed for the hospital in Zuccotti Park. Our simple shelter collapses in seconds and can be wheeled anywhere and set up as a first-aid tent. We also designed a brochure with instructions detailing how occupiers could build their own platforms and collapsible shelters.
The third project, our biggest yet, will be built for the spring as the weather warms and protesters re-group after winter. Project three, the Inflatable G.A., is a 2,000 square foot inflatable dome for the General Assembly, the governmental body of OWS. Our design for the Inflatable GA is finished and all we need now is funding for materials. With your help we will protect the protesters from the elements as they continue their vital work to promote awareness of the economic inequalities that still divide our country. We will create a dry, safe space where occupiers can gather and discuss ideas. This shelter will not only function as a place to gather the General Assembly, but will be a symbolic beacon for the movement. It is a perfect solution because it is lightweight and mobile, and as the movement evolves and relocates the Inflatable GA will travel with the protests.
We will be building test models of the structure in late March and early April of a smaller size (roughly 15’-0” – 20’-0” in diameter). In late April and early May we will build the larger model (roughly 75’-0” in diameter).
Our dream for the Inflatable GA is to leap beyond Wall Street and into Main Street. We see our design as an inexpensive solution for shelter that we want to see used internationally wherever there is need for quick, large scale shelter and could be used in a number of ways, for refugees, community organizations, or any group of people requiring quick, large-scale shelters.
