About this project
The Background
Growing up in the Bible Belt, there's tons of pressure to fit into the sexual majority. But guess what? Millions of us just don't! We may be God-fearin', sweet tea drinkin' lovers of football, but we might also be in love with someone of the same sex.
For nearly a year, I've been working to edit a collection of essays by LGBT Southerners with stories to tell. Unfortunately, putting a book together is both time-consuming and pricey. That's where you come in! You can help make this book become a reality. Not only that, you can help me get copies into public libraries all over the Southeast.
Want your story to be in the book?
As We Are is already in the editing process, but I'm still in desperate need of a few more essays, particularly by bisexual or transgender people from the South. I can't make these real-life stories appear out thin air, folks -- I need your help and your submissions. If you're interested, please click here and read about what sort of essays I'm looking for. Then submit as soon as possible! I can promise you that every essay will be given a thorough read.
Short on cash, but want to help?
I totally understand being in a difficult financial position (I'm a poet for heaven's sake!). If you can't help out monetarily, it would be equally helpful if you could share the link to As We Are's kickstarter site with friends and family through facebook, twitter, email, or your blog. Every little bit of exposure helps the book get one step closer to publication.
Why am I the right person to edit this book?
As a queer woman from Alabama, I known first-hand how difficult it is to be out in the South, much less to tell your own story! I'm passionate about bringing this book into existence because I know my 20-year-old self would have benefited from it in a big way.
New to Kickstarter?
Kickstarter is an amazing site that helps people crowd source funds to get their creative projects off the ground. If you contribute, your credit card/account/whatever won't be charged unless the project meets its goal. If the project has already met the goal, you're welcome to help fund it anyways! In fact, for this project, my goal is set at the minimum amount I'd need to complete to project. Anything above that mark will help out in a VERY BIG way.
A HUGE THANKS TO ALL OF YOU FOR VISITING THIS SITE AND HELPING TO SUPPORT THIS CREATIVE PROJECT!
