Girls Got Geek Hackathon is a software project to introduce girls and young women to the other side of app development.
GIRLS GOT GEEK HACKATHON - APP Development Experiment
Can Girls Find Their Inner Geek AND Have Fun Too?
What we see is what we will be! This hackathon is an opportunity for girls to discover their inner geek and explore new social entrepreneur career options. Girls Got Geek Hackathon offers a collaborative social atmosphere much like a summer camp. Self expression, creativity, fun, passion, and meaningful work is not what most females would think of when talking about mobile app and game development. I’m here to prove them wrong.
This hackathon is for girls who would like to learn more about the world of technology and specifically the world of app development. This is not your traditional hack in that the Girls Got Geek Hackathon features hands on training classes on the latest technologies and trends that expose girls to careers of the future.
Participating girls will form teams of four or five. Each team will come up with an app they want to develop. Using Code Hero - an app that teaches app development, girls will learn what it takes to make a mobile app. The app must be practical, unique, and solve a problem that only girls face.
- --- be an innovative concept
- --- have a compelling use
- --- have a user friendly interface
YOU TELL US WHAT YOU THINK!
With your pledge, you get to tell us whether the participants are having fun or not. How kewl is that!?! Each People’s Choice Thumbs Up counts as 5 points. Each Expert Choice Thumbs Up counts as 10 points. The team with the most points at the end of the experiment is the team that is having the most fun. See, your vote counts.
Every Team Receives a Certificate of Completion!
Teams submitting a completed project will be eligible to attend the completion ceremony, a fun day that includes food, and gift drawings too!
Why Focus on Girls?
Sadly, females are not jumping into the game of technology design with both feet. Yes, girls, like boys, spend hours upon hours playing video games, however, the challenge lies in moving girls from consumers of the games to makers of the games.
Believe it or not, up until the fifth grade, girls and boys both have the same interest in science and math. But then, sometime around the sixth grade, girls are discouraged from taking classes that would give them an educational foundation that supports technology invention.
In addition to the “girls are not good at math” mentality that makes its way from the brain to the lips of those who set limitations for girls, (not you of course - insert wink wink), another part of the problem lies within the girls themselves. To their credit, girls tend to choose fields where they think they can make a difference. And while this is commendable, our society stands to benefit tremendously from more girls contributing to the technology industry.
That’s why my goal is to show girls that technology can be one of those fields where they can make a difference. Girls need to see that technology is full of promise for their future. It starts with planting the seed to let girls know that they too can succeed at what ever they set their mind to when it comes to STEM - science, technology, engineering, and math. But then, we can’t stop there. We must continue to nurture the interest, guide exploration, and expose girls to the capacity they will have to shape the world through technology.
That's where you come in. With your backing, I will create an electrifying opportunity for aspiring young female gammers to get a leg up on developing in a fun, yet competitive, environment. They will be introduced to a variety of technology concepts. No programming skills are needed. Your financial support will go toward closing the skills gap between girls and boys. Aside from “developing a game,” participants will acquire crucial skills such as problem solving, teamwork, and critical thinking. These skills are imperative to moving forward in the new economy. What’s even more thrilling is, these girls will see an immediate benefit. Whether they are writing a paper for school or they decide to pursue a career in app development, every participant will walk away from this challenge stronger than before.
You can take pride in knowing that your donation will go a long way toward changing the heart and mind of a young woman who can make a significant contribution to the needs of our society.
Get On Board!
Your generous donation, small or large, will be used to put on a weekend event where females aged 10 to 24 will join a team that will decide on an “app” to develop based on an agreed upon problem.
Funds are needed to: purchase a license to Code Hero - a gaming app that teaches development, build a website portal, and event needs such as location, supplies, etc.
For the past 18 years, Artist Shalay has created paintings for the White house, the legendary Irvin “Magic” Johnson, comedian Steve Harvey, the National Council of Negro Women, colleges and universities, commonwealths and many other organizations and causes. She is particularly drawn to causes that mentor to youth through art.
My goal is to raise $5,500. With more I can do more! Soooo, any amount over the primary goal will be used to add more girls and to add another event. If you are so kind as to pledge $7500, I can add more girls. If you are so kind as to pledge over $10,000, I can have two events. I’m up for the challenge! What about YOU? Making a financial pledge is certainly very much needed and appreciated. Without the finances, this project won’t see the light of day because it is all or nothing. So if you believe that Girls Got Geek, put your money where your belief is and spread some geek.
P.S. If you would like to keep up with this project, check the Twitter hashtag #GirlsGotGeek or on Facebook Cynthia Renee Frazier.
P.P.S. In addition to your generous donation, I ask you to be an ambassador who encourages young girls to know that there is no such thing as “good at math.” Rather, tell them that like most things in life, riding a bicycle or driving a car, or even learning to eat vegetables, math is an acquired taste. The more you do it, the better you become at it.
Have a question? If the info above doesn't help, you can ask the project creator directly.
