About this project
ADVANCE PRAISE FROM THE PRESS:
"Like [Bruce Springsteen's album] Nebraska, Pryor’s songwriting lends itself to cinematic storytelling, with heartbreaking tales of epic journeys and human frailties. His songs aren’t so much played as they are passed on, with melodies that sound much older, dustier and worn than he is." -- Jeffrey Barg, Philadelphia Weekly (Read the full article.)
WHAT ARE WE DOING, AND WHY?
We (Scott Pryor and The Common Sinners) are making a 5-song EP ('EP' is music business-lingo for a recording that is shorter than a full album). This project has two goals: 1) document the sound, feel, and energy of The Common Sinners that we've developed in the past year of playing together live; and 2) record several of Scott's new songs while they are supple and fresh.
We are recording at Devin Greenwood's beautiful Honey Jar Studio in Brooklyn, NY (Devin produced Scott's last album Theater for the Weary). Most of the recording work is finished, but the mixing, mastering, art design and pressing of CDs is yet to be done.
WHY ARE WE ASKING FOR MONEY?
We are raising money to pay for the rest of the project. We are independent musicians who don't have the financial backing of a record company. Scott has already invested money to pay for the initial 6 days of recording and The Common Sinners have been incredibly generous with their talents by donating time in the studio. But all that only gets us so far. We need at least another $4,000 to finish the project and make it available for you to listen and enjoy.
Remember: with Kickstarter, we only get your contribution if we have enough pledges to meet our fundraising goal.
WHAT IS THE MONEY FOR?
$2,500 -- Recording and mixing (this includes studio time, travel cost to NYC and per diems for the Philly musicians)
$1,000 -- Mastering (this process makes everything sound extra good)
$2,000 -- Pressing CDs, printing, promotion (this part helps get the word out so as many people as possible can hear it)
$5,500 -- TOTAL
WHY ARE WE ONLY ASKING FOR $4,000 IF TOTAL COST IS $5,500?
If we can raise the total cost, that would obviously be great! However, we also want to make sure that the project gets finished, so we're asking for the minimum amount to complete that goal. If we are fortunate to raise more than the total cost, we will put that extra money towards the next recording.
WHEN WILL IT BE FINISHED?
If we can raise the money, the EP should be finished by the end of November, and if you contribute to the project, you should have your copy no later than year's end. However, we may not officially release it to the wider public until the beginning of next year. The reason for that is that we'd like to shop it around to see if we can find a small record label who might be interested in releasing it on a wider scale than we can ourselves.
DON'T HAVE MONEY TO CONTRIBUTE? YOU CAN STILL HELP!
If you can't chip, there's still plenty you can do to help. The biggest thing is to spread the word! Tell your friends and family about this project. Encourage them to contribute. We only need 800 people to contribute $5 to meet our goal, or 400 folks to contribute $10, or 100 to chip in $40, etc. The more people that know about it, the better!
THE FINAL WORD
Thank you for your support! It is because of the patronage, large and small, of many folks like yourself, that we are able to share our music with the world. That's a great and significant gift, and we are mighty grateful.

Scott Pryor hails from the woods of North Carolina and Virginia, but now calls Philadelphia home. Drawing on heritage that spans the urban and the rural, Pryor’s songs revel in the grit, bone and redemptive seeds to be found in each. From swimming holes to skyscrapers, from plows to asphalt playgrounds, Pryor stitches together the strange and mundane bits of a weathered and heroic Americana. Filled with wonder and longing, his most recent album, "Theater for the Weary" is ultimately defined by the triumph of earnest joy in spite of the facts — supported by the delight-filled clatter and swoon of his backing band, The Common Sinners.
