About this project

El Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is an important holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and Latin America commemorating deceased loved ones.  It is marked by iconic images of skulls and skeletons, marigolds, and vibrant altars to the dead.  It is a time for celebration and remembrance, both individually and as a community.

Tieton Arts & Humanities needs your support to assist Oaxacan artist, Fulgencio Lazo, in the creation of a large-scale sandpainting for its 2nd Annual Day of the Dead Celebration.  Lazo will be constructing a twenty-five by thirty foot original sand painting that combines his artistic vision and the traditional artistic expressions of Oaxaca.  The sandpainting will be the centerpiece of an exhibition on the Day of the Dead at the Mighty Tieton Warehouse Gallery in Tieton, WA.

Creating a sandpainting of this scale is a huge undertaking.  It requires a team of fifteen people two full days to delicately sketch and color all the minute details of this design from hundreds of pounds of sand.  Your donations will be used to pay the artist and his assistants, and to buy materials.  We need YOUR help to make this happen!

Our funding goal is $500, but we would love to raise a $1,000 to help support the 2nd Annual Day of the Dead Celebration.  This year's program includes a student altar workshop, an exhibition on the Day of the Dead, and a day-long festival with craft activities, storytelling, food, and music.  Any donations over $500 will help purchase supplies to make sugar skulls, pan de muerto (dead bread), and kites for the dead!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
