Hello Backers of The Giving Garden,
Since the last update, where I wrote about the founding of Hudson Valley Seed, I wanted to share with you, our founding supporters, some of our latest updates.
Hudson Valley Seed is establishing educational gardens in Beacon, NY's four public elementary schools as well as The Garrison School in Garrison, NY. Funding from The Giving Garden Kickstarter campaign has gone directly into these pilot gardens. From these programs we will establish best practices and document our successes, so that the project can scale to other communities, (like Newburgh who is on Hudson Valley Seed's waiting list for next year).
Hudson Valley Seed gardens follow the same unique model as The Giving Garden:
1. The gardens produce from September through June, allowing students to harvest vegetables for the "duration of the academic calendar. This is achieved through the use of cold-tolerant plants, row cover, and low tunnels.
2. State mandated core curriculum standards are achieved in the garden, so that no classroom time is lost as hands-on learning is gained.
3. Gardens are built on a scalable model, so that a successful program design can spread and be shared across school districts and communities.
Farm-to-School education addresses society-wide issues of childhood obesity, poor nutrition, and a curriculum void of life-skill training. Hudson Valley Seed brings vitality to the academic classroom, working within national, state and local frameworks to bring environmental education and healthy nutrition to schools and communities.

Wishing you all a happy and restful summer,
