Had He Fidelity is a short film that explores themes of grief and religion. Set in 1934 rural Illinois, two men discuss their lives.
The way KickStarter functions: if we don't raise all the money, we don't get anything.
THE DEVIL, had he fidelity,
Would be the finest friend—
Because he has ability, But Devils cannot mend.
Perfidy is the virtue
That would he but resign,—
The Devil, so amended,
Were durably divine.
- Emily Dickinson
WHAT YOU WANT TO DO
As a cinema studies student at the University of Illinois in Champaign, a school with no film program, I want to create the first ever senior thesis film to come out of the University and I want it to be good enough to submit to Sundance.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT
Had He Fidelity is a 15 minutes short film set in 1934 in rural central Illinois. When a man show's up at a farmers door because his car has broken down the two men are quickly put at odds. The farmer wants the man to leave, but for whatever reason the man does not want to go. It becomes quickly apparent that the man is grief stricken and is looking for someone to blame. Sometimes evil is real, and sometimes it only exists because we are looking for it.
HOW I PLAN TO DO IT
As there isn't anyone at the University of Illinois of Illinois studying film I have become creative in putting together a cast and crew. The crew is made up a number of talented individuals. The lighting, sound, costume, and set designers, all come from extensive theater backgrounds. Our lighting designer, for example, has worked on theatrical productions all around the Chicago area.
The community around Champaign may not be a major city, but it still has numerous creative and talented people to pull from. Our location scout, for example, has worked with other films (shorts and features) in the area. Our cinematographer and key grip are also people in the area who have themselves worked on national television shots, feature films, and shorts of their own.
As for actors, we will be holding open auditions on April 17th which have been advertised to the University of Illinois, a local community college (Parkland), and the community as a whole.
For equipment, we are pulling from various places. People in the area are lending us various pieces of lighting equipment. The CANON 7D,which we will be shooting on, I have bought myself. Some of the sound equipment is even being provided by the theater department at the University of Illinois. Though, without renting certain necessary things, we still do not have everything we need.
We will be shooting the film in September in and around the Champaign- Urbana area. We are currently surveying numerous locations in an effort to find a location that best fits our needs.
WHAT THE MONEY IS FOR
I am working to create a student film without the financial help of a University. This means that the money you donate will go toward four things.
- First we need insurance: equipment, liability, and medical are essential in making sure we have a safe, and relaxed set.
- Second, we need to buy or rent equipment. While much has been lent to us, much is still lacking. We need a tripod, lenses, period costumes, and grip (lighting) equipment.
- Third, we need to provide for the cast and crew. While we will not be paying them, they will be provided food and nonalcoholic drink while on set.
- Fourth, we need money to submit the film to festivals. Our goal is to submit to Sundance. There is no point in making a film if no one will see it. Film festival entries are expensive. We need your help.
