A picture book created to inspire the sense of possibility... this is the fantastical tale of a man who believed he could do anything.
From beginning to end, this has been a project of love.
The author, Kalidas, wrote the story for his son. He describes the beginning of his journey:
"Since my son Satya was three (he's now fifteen), I've been writing stories to him as a way to share, connect and strengthen our relationship. The concept and the first stanza of what would become 'The Man From Space' popped into my mind one morning on the bike ride in to work."
The man, he came from space they say.
He came in the most unusual way.
Riding a star to the atmosphere,
He jumped to a rock that was flying near.

"I thought this would be a fun story to write, and when I got the idea to transform one of the stories for Satya into a book, this was the one I wanted to do."
A track of lightning he caught in his hand
And slid on down until he hit land
Once on the ground he walked at a pace
To make a Thoroughbred horse go red in the face

Motivation: For Kalidas, the primary goal was to show his son that you can create something in this life. Whatever you are passionate about, you can take it from idea to manifestation, conception to fulfillment. 'The Man From Space' represents that passion, and shows all the little steps it takes to achieve the final product. With this know-how, what can't a person do?
The story: The story is about a man, an Everyman, an ageless traveler with a dash of Tom Sawyer, who comes to Earth and travels the globe from ecosystem to ecosystem, doing things that just seem impossible. He loves the Earth and all its inhabitants and can do all these miraculous things because of this love; and because he does not even know the concept of "cannot".
He landed in a city of steel and concrete
And walked amongst people who stare at their feet.
The people were rushing all over the place
It was the man who stood still with a smile on his face.

The illustrator: Gale Whitman, a Fort Collins based artist, believed in this project from the start. Her illustrations (acrylic paintings on watercolor paper), have added incredible depth and enriched the story, all while capturing Kalidas' vision perfectly. Her work has made the words leap off the page.
Our Goal: The money we seek will pay for the ISBN number and UPC codes, scanning the artwork, printing up to six hundred copies of the book, shipping, and half a dozen other little things. Thank you so much for your interest!
For Kalidas, "even having one copy in hand would complete the original purpose of this project: setting an example of what can be done, for my son."
FAQ
-
If we reach our $4900 goal, Kickstarter takes 5% of the amount pledged. Amazon credit card fees are 3-5%. We plan to order 300 paperback copies and 100 hard cover copies of 'The Man From Space' from the printer. The money from our generous backers will pay for the printing and shipping of books to us, the required ISBN and UPC bar codes, and the printing of our other reward items (bookmarks, postcards, and posters). We have other expenses as well, including the scanning/digitizing of the artwork and the graphic design/layout of the book. So if we exceed our $4900 Kickstarter goal, any extra pledges will help cover more of our expenses.

Kalidas and Gale will be self-publishing 'The Man From Space'. We have gotten price quotes from several printing companies, but we haven't made a final decision. If you can recommend a good children's picture book printer, please let us know!

Please add $10 to pledges that request 1 paperback or 1 hard cover book as a reward. For higher pledge levels that include 2 books, please add $15.

Gale painted the illustrations with acrylic paint on 140 lb. cold press watercolor paper (Montval Aquarelle brand). Most of the paintings are 10"x12"; the three 2-page 'spreads' are 20"x12". Gale spent 10-20 hours on each painting over the course of 15 months.
